Guest guest
Yeah you're at the crux of the problem and what's really hard to change. The snacking habit that you've got is destructive. You do what I do and break it up into components and try to mess with it to where you don't screw it up too much so as to hurt your homework, computing or whatever but still try to take the bad part out. That's all cool. When I was heavy I got into being so lazy that I simply didn't care and that just lead to even worse things getting into these little pockets of time and " activities " . That makes it even harder to pull the bad parts out if you're getting more and more bad things into them. Changing a location is a great idea. I should really do that with my setup but I hold on to that. Probably not good but hey not EVERYTHING can be perfect right? A laptop to go places is NOT a bad idea and well worth it. I don't have a laptop and maybe I should have one for the same reason. Winter in Michigan doesn't really connect to all that well but I can see that being a valid argument for me to get one in the summer. I think I'll do that. I'll have to work out in my mind that I want to pack up a laptop, go for a walk or ride/run and use be disconnected from my house (where I've got the comfort of my clothes, bathroom, TV, and, wait for it, fridge/food. Hey something I might suggest here is that when you do go for a walk to wherever that you take only a set amount of money or no money at all. That way you can't buy more than your single non fat decaf latte or tea. You have to weigh that with the need to have money in the event of an emergency but really if you've got a cell phone with you then you should be okay. You'd be surprised the power of not having money when you go out gives you in controlling your food purchasing/eating. I have had a large box in my van full of water bottles for many months. I removed it today because the water was starting to freeze and would soon be solid. Not only is this a bummer for me but my kids have gotten used to it and are not happy. But what do you do in Michigan? I mean it's freaking in the teens tonight. Stuff freezes. I'll have to think of something else to do. I'd appreciate any suggestions. I think what I'm going to do is take a soft cooler I have and set that next to the door, then just load it with a half dozen bottles every day and just tote that around in the car for the day. If those freeze then I'll just let them thaw and put new ones in. That will just become another bag, like my gym bag, that I tote around. It'll work great. It'll keep my mind busy with stupid little wastes of time. Weee! You're right about having water around. If you have water you can't eat. I've had to put my mind on things that are degrees of separation out from eating. By that I mean I first set my mind on not eating 15 minutes before, during or 45 minutes after eating. I do that religiously. But I could still snack doing that right? Well then I through in constantly drinking when not eating and bam! I can't eat because I had a drink only a few minutes ago. Uh oh? What do I do then? Just sit and THINK and STARVE and get all worked up on food and not being satisfied and crap for the next few minutes until I can tackle a bag of whatever and start snacking? Nope, satisfy yourself immediately with a water. You'll really get charged up on the instant gratification. The fact that it's plain old water or maybe crystal light and not what you THINK you really want, a snack/food, will be over shadowed in your brain. Your mind and body will start to tell your conscious " Dude you ROCK! I feel bored and think I'm hungry and you throw something at me and I get some satisfaction? I don't feel guilty? In fact I feel a bit better? Plus I have to occupy my time and energy into worrying about finding a bathroom or more water? Man that's cool! " Maybe you're brain likes to sit and dwell on choices of snack...MMM there's so many! Maybe you like to spend money on snacks. Wooo spend spend spend what a drug! Hey you can do that all with water. There are so many options with water. You can sweat what flavors there are, what small amounts of carbs/sugars there are, do what I do and sweat sodium. Just get your mind on being weird about SOMETHING other than trying to shove the WORSE and MOST crappy food you can into your body. Nobody is saying you can't be a nut job and sweat something about snacking just do it healthy. OK enough on that. It's not just a saying, dehydration does make you think you're hungry. I'm drinking about two gallons a day. I can't remember the last time I was really hungry per se. Certainly not where I was REALLY hungry. I used to try to have the philosophy where if I thought I was hungry I couldn't eat anything when I couldn't decide what to eat. That was an attempt to just not grab anything and eat whatever was easy/bad to eat. Well now I find myself sometimes thinking, " Hey it's getting late, you HAVE to eat something or you're going to screw up the whole schedule thing, not get in enough protein/veggies or whatever. " I then find that I'm almost forcing myself to decide what to eat and forcing myself to eat at a particular time. Talk about WEIRD compared to just grabbing anything and everything and constantly stuffing it down to feel better. Now I have to force myself to think about eating? Just weird. It's not that I'm NOT hungry at 7pm it's that I've put other stuff in my life/mind that is more important than my hunger so THEY interfer with hunger rather than HUNGER interferring with everything else. Subtle but true. Sorry for writing a book but this is the crazy crap that knocks around in my head during the day. What a messed up guy right? Mike in GR (damn did I say it was in the teens? Guest guest
Feels Like: 20° F right now here. I like that. Windchill sucks though with strong gusts. I like to have a few inches of snow around. Guest guest
Ok CA/FL people are totally messed in the head. 65F is time to break out the shorts and t-shirts you nuts. 85 is time to get inside to enjoy air conditioning. The idea that you would think 65 is too cold is just not right. Here, think about this. I'm wearing shorts and t-shirt during the day when it's 65 and it drops to 50 in the evening maybe. OH NO TOO COLD!! Wait a second, there's a sweat shirt. A nice, comfy, fleece like sweat shirt. Put it on, maybe not even put on long pants, and bam you've got total comfort. Now through that in with a large fire pit on the longest fresh water beaches in the world and man it just doesn't get any better. Let me paint this picture. You're on the beach in CA/FL late at night and it's a balmy 70-75 or you can be in MI on the beach when it's 50. What's the better weather for coercing your date into snuggling? It's okay, you know I'm right. Mike in GR (granted it's not 65 right now) I have posted before that > > I wanted to drop five pounds this month, and > > get into the 240's.....This was my Dec. goal...... > > > > Well last week I cut out all the crap I was snacking on, and stuck to > > a protein rich diet...I got back on my shakes, 2-3 a day depending on > > my workouts.....And stepped up the workouts also... > > > > Its just the 7th, And I have hit my goal for the month!!! Guest guest
I would agree with that Mike except my kids have been nothing short of amazing. In fact I'd say they're almost better at this stuff than I am simply because they're doing it for themselves WITHOUT surgery and doing it all the time. I've heard they even do it to their mother, my ex wife, friends, grand parents, etc. The " THIS " I'm talking about is read labels and avoid bad foods. They make faces; say EWWWW and all that about things as simple as chips and fries. My daughter won't touch drinks with calories. My son still has lemonade once in a while but usually orders water even though he wouldn't be paying for the lemonade. You know why? Because I explained the cost to him and he internalized it and owns it now knowing that even though we might not always thank him that he's helping his hosts by not incurring that extra expense and he's helping himself not getting that sugar. They FREAK OUT wait staff by asking what their meals come with and altering their meals to remove crap and get in vegetables. I sit back and say NOTHING. The wait staff gets flustered, confused, and often has to carry on an actual conversation with a young teenager. They're just stupefied that some kid would question a burger and fries short of wanting it plain. It gets really fun when they get to me and ask me if I'm sure I don't want ANYTHING to drink, " Are you SURE you don't want a water sir? " LMAO!! Will I explode with you it? HAHA. Eating out is its own entertainment. It's great in house too because now I know whatever they eat they're eating some what healthy even if they think they need to snack. You know what, they don't really snack much now either. So removing the crap snacks for healthy snacks not only seems to get rid of the bad food but at least slightly affects the bad habit itself. I don't get pestered to go out and get crap either. Oh and another side effect. If we do go for a walk and find a neat new shop, go in and there's an unusual treat like a chocolate bar or something we'll get one. Now it's probably only a buck or two, pretty common for someone who snacks all the time right? Well my kids thank me, repeatedly, for a few hours for the treat. That's right, for a couple bucks I get THANKS from my kids. What's more is we split it three or more ways. Wait a second!!?? That means it's not $6 or more and we're all getting in hundreds of calories? Damn right. Sure we're eating crap but it's a once in a while occurrence, it's only a fraction of the whole serving; it's only a hundred or two calories, etc. I guess maybe my mind never considered this stuff when I was so busy trying to decide what sort of chips I was going to be eating next. I think " normal " or thin people just take this stuff for granted or don't care. You have to revel in these treats. Don't deny yourself cold having a treat once in a while but when you do really live it up and you don't have to go to extremes with the treat itself, just your enjoyment of it. Guest guest
I can't guess. Get rid of them. Give them healthy snacks. They'll complain for probably months. But it will end. They'll be your biggest allies in a few months. They'll make their parents crazy because buying healthy whole fruits and veggies requires you to shop more often and is usually pretty pricey. It's hilarious to watch it annoy my parents and exwife because they can't stock up on sale snacks but instead half to buy bananas and broccoli almost daily. HAHA A food diary REALLY helped me out a lot. I don't keep one now but can usually recall what I've eaten for the past week and could even speculate, within probably 10-15% accuracy on the nutrition data contained in every bit of food. Basically your brain becomes its own diary after you get in the HABIT of writing it down. DO IT! We're on your side but don't discount having even those cute nephews/neices on your side. Kids will freak you out with the level of control they have over you. Heck, right now they're controlling you by making you have crap snacks in your house. I'd say that's pretty amazing. Get rid of that stuff. Mike in GR > > Normally I don't have the goodies in my house, but my youngest sister and her 4 & 5 year olds moved in with me. Can you guess why the snacks are here? I see them all the time and they call out to me. I really tried yesterday and failed about 10:00PM. I even drank 2 large cups of hot tea. I must increase my protein. I had ordered some from the internet at unjury. I am going to try and do 2 protein shakes and a meal each day. I also went shopping today and got some books and a food diary, I hope this will help. I also just read the book " Weight loss surgery for dummies " . There was a lot of info in there so I got a little motivation. And with you people on my side where can I go wrong? > WE ALL CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!! > Judy > > > > Re: Great News! > > > You go Mike! Guest guest
I can't believe you say I get wired and go on and on. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. LOL!! Then again, your posts make a lot more sense and aren't just rambling like mine. I appreciate your comments about finding ways to play psychological warfare with your own brain. Just realizing that your stomach can be just as happy with water as it is with food is VERY important. If the pouch is stretched with something, it can't tell the difference and thinks it is full. That is a wonderful realization and I've experienced it several times over the past few days. I keep thinking I'm hungry but I KNOW I'm not getting in enough water, so I drink. Then miraculously, I'm not hungry anymore. And the seemingly obsessive nature of studying and researching water and everything else isn't such a bad thing. If you are focussed on finding the highest quality products to put in your body instead of grabbing what is handy, then your health will be better for it in the long run. I think if we had ALL thought about food that way all of our lives, then a lot of us might not be in this situation right now. in MI (and yes, it's in the teens, but at least there is SUN!!) > > > > > > COME ON JUDY!! Guest guest
65 to 85 in Oklahoma is like heaven. We have a few weeks of extreme heat in the summer and a few days of extreme cold in the winter. We get a lot of wind here which can help or hinder the outside temps. Overall, temperature in Oklahoma is moderate. Plus it's just a nice place to live.
