" This article came from Lexis-Nexis, which is a subscription service I get from school. 1) Most people can consume up to 400 mg of caffeine per day without side effects. That's about 4-5 cups of coffee. However, you should take into account other sources of caffeine - like chocolate. 2) 600-750 mg or more of caffeine per day can cause extreme side effects including: missed heartbeats and palpitations, mood swings, sweating and panic attacks. 3) People who are addicted to caffeine crave it and only feel revived by drinking coffee or cola to ease jitteriness. Levels of 1000 mg of caffeine can be toxic. 4) Excessive caffeine increases the risk of osteoporosis. People who drink caffeine lose calcium. 5) Caffeine triggers adrenaline. It can affect your weight or make you crave sweets. 6) Some studies show a link between caffeine and miscarriage. They recommend eliminating caffeine or reducing intake to below 300 mg during pregnancy. 7) Coffee contains katweol and cafestol which can increase cholesterol. High amounts of coffee also raises levels of homocysteine, which is associated with heart disease. 8) Caffeine temporarily raises blood pressure, which is good for people with POTS. However, the increased blood pressure in the average coffee drinker isn't considered a serious risk for heart disease compared to smoking, alchohol, and lack of exercise. 9) Reducing or eliminating caffeine is said to help relieve pain in women with fibrocystic breast disease. 10) Caffeine can be a headache trigger or a headache reliever, depending on the cause of headache. Coffee constricts peripheral arteries in the brain, easing headaches caused by swollen blood vessels.
