Thanks ! from Las Vegas Hi I haven't had that exact surgery, but a different one, but as a general rule, hand surgery is usually pretty nasty, but what option do you have? If you've truly have tried everything else, just be a good patient(therapy) & I'm sure you've done your homework & research. The hand is just one of those real sensitive places & there are so many bones in it. Hope it goes well, we'll be thinking of you. Let us know how you're doing. Guest guest Posted March 24, 2004 Report Share Posted March 24, 2004 HI I'm having that surgery tomorrow. I had the left thumb done last March. It was the best thing I could have ever done. I was in the surgical drsg for 10 days-then the stitches came out, and I was put in a well padded splint for about 3 weeks. I think it was. He uses a splint because of the swelling. After the 3 weeks, the pins are taken out in the office, and I went to PT. It was too early for me to go because it takes me about twice as long to heal (EDS). PT took the longest because I couldn't gain strength. Finally about 3-4 months later, it was found that the middle joint of the thumb was the problem. So a fusion was done for about 3 different things that were wrong with it. Once that was OK, I gained strength just fine. As far as pin....it HURTS!!! I had pain for about 5 weeks, and then no more pain. The first 2-3 weeks were a constant level 8-9. But every one is different-and I imagine the thumb being done tomorrow will be different than the one done last year. Having EDS and having my finger and hand joints being so loose, made PT a real challenge. I had to work my buns off to get it where it is now. I'm still working with it to keep gaining strength. The pinch strength is excellent-and so is grip strength. I had no idea how much pinch and grip strength I'd lost until I found that out. the one being done tomorrow is so weak. If you have any more questions I'll be glad to answer them. I'll be off and on the computer this afternoon for a couple more hours--4p central time. Then I'm off for a few days-week.
