Shauna -

We have the shoe and LOVE it. I've never had to deal with the Markell

shoe because my daughter has atypical feet and we knew it wouldn't work so I

can't compare but to me the price was well worth it. We are attempting to get

insurance to reimburse us for the cost even though it is " out of network " . Even

if they don't we're set to order another pair.

Shoes

Hi -

I wrote a few weeks ago because my 16 month old son had been released

from the DBB at 10 months of age and now his clubfoot is recurring.

We saw one of Dr. Ponseti's specialists in Cincinnati and she agrees

that he must go back in the brace, and gave us a website of a new

shoe that Dr. Ponseti has approved for the DBB. It is made by a man

who works with Dr. Ponseti named . It is a sandal with

open toes and heels and looks like it would be A LOT EASIER to get on

than the current Markell laced shoes. Has anyone tried the new shoe,

and if so, how is it? I am thinking of ordering it because my son

just will not sit still to let me lace up his DBB shoes. It is a lot

more expensive ($350.00) but I am wondering if it might be worth it?

Thanks,

Shauna

Hi Shauna,

It shouldn't take long to lace the Markell's up. Try this in the meantime

(till you get your 's if you do decide to); tie a knot in the

center of each lace (undo them first) so you always know where the center

is. Then lace the shoes up and tie another knot in each end. This way,

you can pull them out very loose but they don't ever come out of the

holes. Then the lacing takes all of about 20 seconds, all you do is

tighten them and then tie. Also, if you've got the new style

Markell's you know the strap is very short (grrrr....). Punch a hole at

the end of the strap so that you can put it into the buckle in that last

hole when you put his foot into the shoe (so it doesn't pull the strap

out). Not ideal, a longer strap would be ideal... but it works. Also, I

put her on her back with her feet towards me to put them on, maybe it's

because she's used to it but she mostly just lets me put them on. If she

sits up it's more difficult but if she's lying there like she's getting her

diaper change it's usually pretty smooth. Once I get the straps buckled I

can keep her in place because the bar is on and I have leverage for twisty

girl lol.

A lot of people here have the shoes, personally I'd love a pair

but they're too expensive when the Markell's work just fine. I finally saw

with my own eyes Kai's 's last week when Angel was here in Portland

(I have pics, I will send to the pics list soon, I promise!) and they are

very cool. The thing I noticed about them that I really liked was that

they're flat on the bottom and when he stands in them his feet or rather

the soles of the shoes are flat on the floor rather than balancing on the

bar only. I don't think the 's would work for us because Darbi's

feet grow very fast. She is at the end of her 3.5's right now and has only

had them a couple of months! She's 17mo as of a couple days ago and wears

a size 4.5-5 in regular shoes. At that rate I'd be spending $1100/year in

's! I'm good with the Markell's. I think they're a good shoe for

those of us who don't have issues with atypical CF and they're very heavy

duty which is good with toddlers. Personally, if there are no issues other

than the laces I wouldn't spend the $ but that's just me. There is also

the issue with babies with larger feet. had to special make Kai's

shoes because he didn't have a mold set up for his size feet. And that was

sometime around when Kai was a year old IIRC. He *may* have come up with

larger sizes by now, you'll have to give him a call and ask. Do you need

his contact information?

There's a picture on the CFPics website of a baby wearing

's. They're very cute.

Glad to hear you're getting back on track. Was this same Ponseti trained

Dr. the one who released him at 10 mo or did you take him out yourself? (

I remember a parent saying recently that for personal reasons the baby

didn't wear the FAB, was that you?) Also, since he's relapsing has he been

casted, or are you trying to use the brace to correct? If so, I hope you

will consider a second opinion because the shoes do not correct, they only

maintain correction and relapses should absolutely be casted again. Please

don't rely on the brace to correct, your son is still young enough to be

able to work with the casting now but if you just try the shoes and 6 mo's

down the road you find that it isn't working his feet are older and will be

more difficult to correct with casting.

Hoping for the best for you and your little guy!

no, that wasn't me that took the FAB off for personal reasons. We

took it off because our ortho surgeon said he didn't need it

anymore. We did get second opinion from a doctor trained by Dr.

Ponseti. She said the correction is still good, it's just the

forefoot that is turning in and therefore the FAB will definitely

work.

As for the shoes, it takes me 20 minutes to put on the

Markells because of kicking and squirming, no matter what position we

use. I think I will try the s.

P.S. In regards to the price, it wouldn't cost you that much more

because when they go up a size, you just buy the shoes only, which

you can attach on and off yourself. You don't buy the whole FAB,

thank goodness.
