Hi ,

I wouldn't recommend the anesthetic- unless it is for you! But then Carole

was very happy with it for Kris.

Emma was 3 1/2 for when we tried casting and then 4 for the ATTT surgery & 6

weeks of casting. We talked to her a lot about it beforehand, showing her

feet and how they weren't straight enough, talking about how she did trip

alot and got hurt, all these things that the casting could make better. You

could say he'll be able to run better too. We put a barbie in casts with

Emma also saying that the barbie had to hold her legs still, and that it

didn't hurt but she'd have to get around in a stroller or on her bum (some

kids do walk in the casts). We had some left over casting gauze but you can

buy it at an art store or maybe pharmacy so if Evan has a plastic doll of

some kind you could try that.

We also promised a lot of treats and fun things. We went to the local

Biodome a lot, and other indoor stroller-able things. Lots of sit down

crafts and games, lots of one on one time. We also drew all over her casts,

and so did her friends.

The casting sessions were never easy. The first at 3 1/2 was better than the

second set (also at 3 1/2) but they made some mistakes that hurt her which

caused us to lose some credibility. Bring some small toys and/or candies

that he has never seen in a surprise bag for when they are doing the

casting.

I hope everything goes well for you and that this completely corrects Evan's

feet.

HTH,

Carole, what a relief to have the first cast/OR thing behind you.

Evan goes for his first re-cast on May 27. I think they'll need to

give ME a general anesthetic if Evan responds negatively. Thank

goodness we have some time to really talk it through with him so

he'll know what to expect. Does anyone have words of advice on how

to prepare older kids for casts?
