You have no idea how lucky you are with your chiro. By that, I mean

having one who has taken the time, trouble and expense to branch out

and learn some of the alternative approaches. I have known a couple

who are the same way and they are outstanding.

I am not critical of the profession per se. I am critical of some

of the entrenched, narrow minded attitudes I see in far too many of

the individual practitioners. But this same criticism applies to

far too large a proportion of the regular medical establishment as

well. What really ticks me off is when I am talking to one of them

and they basically blow off some of the alternatives as pure

superstition without knowing squat about them, let alone how to do

them. I will stop at that or my blood pressure will rise to

dangerous levels.

Jin Shin Do is basically just an advanced school of acupressure.

The big distinctions with it compared to some of the others is that

it fully recognizes and uses the eight extraordinary meridians

(which most of them don't) and does all releases with a two-hand

hold, local and distal. I really believe that working two points

simultaneously makes a huge difference in effectiveness.

The book I mentioned is the best if you are only going to have one.

If you do get it and start working with the acupressure and want to

take it to the next level, let me know, and I will give you the

names for some others.

As for books on Polarity, that's a mixed bag. The best book for

just general background and theory is " The Polarity Process " by

lyn Sills. It does not, however, do much for teaching actual

techniques. There are some out there that do have practical

techniques in them (and I do have copies) but I am not that

impressed with them. The best is a five volume set of manuals that

were part of my class. They were developed several years ago, over

a period of several years, by the person ( Kiewe) that my

instructor took her training from. I have never seen them in a

store and they are not listed through Amazon.com. The last time I

got a set of them they were right at $100 but the prices recently

went up to $150 for the five. They are not cheap, but they are

excellent manuals. If you do decide at some point that you would

like to get a set, let me know. My instructor knows what I have

been doing with the list and is really supportive of it. I would

have no problem arranging a set for you through her. Whatever you

do, do NOT start by trying to read volumes one and two of " Polarity

Therapy " by Randolph Stone. They are way over the head of, not just

somebody starting out, they are over the head of most practitioners.

Touch for Health? I took a weekend seminar in it and kind of figure

it is a blend of Therapeutic Touch and Acupressure. It uses

elements of both. I was impressed with what I saw and think the

basic book is good. I haven't done much with it, but that is

primarily because I have far higher levels of training in Polarity

and Jin Shin Do and generally go to them first.

As for TMJ being caused by dentists and orthodontist, you bet it

happens. It happens all the time. The problem is that they don't

realize that they are part of the problem and not the solution.

Oh, I do know how lucky I am to have my chiro - I'm even luckier than

that though, I grew up with a wonderful chiro in IA - my grandmother

started with him, then his son went into practice with him, that's

when I started going. Eventually the grandson came into the practice

and both his father and grandfather have retired - my mom still goes

to him.

They use the DNFT technique most of the time - which is very gentle

thumb thrusts.

When I moved to NJ I went to one chiro that did the pop and crack

technique and when the pain didn't quit he said I'd have to live with

it - found another chiro who was nothing but a quack trying to milk

money out of me - it should have been criminal what he was doing!

Finally found another dnft chiro for the remainder of my time in NJ.

Moved to AL - no dnft, but after breaking down in tears over my pain

at a nutrition store, the owner told me to go to her chiro - what

bliss.

Not only does she learn all this other stuff she doesn't charge an

arm and a leg - her inital fee was $150/month for my entire family

(6) as often as we needed it. At the time I was going 2x per week

with the kids tagging along getting their adjustments. She joined my

insurance company so now visits are practically free and I don't need

to go as often (so much less pain).

She has been very involved in my care, and once even went to a

seminar with just me in mind. She figured out about my ligament

laxity but had no clue as to why. Now that I've told her she is

learning. Yes, I know I am lucky!

As to the regular medical doctors - I have not been as lucky - lots

of bump visits there.

I'll start with the Jin Shin Do book and perhaps the Thie book - If I

get real into this I might go for the advanced expensive polarity

books - I can only learn so much at one time - but I'm learning as

much as possible - not only is it me that benefits, but the most

important thing - my 4 kids!! We figure we'll need adjustment,

massages, etc the rest of our lives - we might as well learn to do it

ourselves :-)

Thanks again for all the info!!
