There was also quite a delay before the stuff started working. I was not on methadone first however, I was only using norco. Its been a little over a month and most, if not all, of the side effects are gone or minimal. I love being able to wake up in the morning and get out of bed without waiting for pain meds to kick in! I would think that the effect would be stronger but I am only on 50 mcg every 3 days. I can say from my experience that it really only lasts 2 days, even with norco for BT, but we are all different. In reality I would much prefer oxycontin because that way I have some control over pain levels and fluctuations (sounds like a dirty word ... its not always as bad as it has been these past few months, but with all the controversy surrounding it, I am hesitant to ask. Anyway, do give it a fair trial before you make up your mind, and make sure you have BT meds on hand until it really kicks in. We are all different so there is no way of knowing in advance which is the best med for each of us. Good luck! Char

Guest guest
Dear Sue, I am another one who has been using the Fentenyal patch for a long time, a good 6 years. I too consider it a life saver. I would not be able to drive if I weren't using the patch! It is important to be sure you are opioid tolerant before trying the patch. Basically, can you easily tolerate without bad side effects medicine that has an opioid base like percocet(?). Once it is determined that you are opiod tolerant then you would start with the lowest patch dose of 25 and stay on it till any side effects settle down. They don't have to go away all together, that could take some time. Nausea is a common side effect along with constipation. As long as it is tolerable you should try and stick it out for at least 2 weeks before giving up. The whole idea of medication is to try and bring you as close to a " normal " state as possible to give you a better quality of life. This is also why you can take strong medicine for acute pain even while on the patch. The patch just brings you close to a " normal " person who would also need medication after say a surgery. Everyone is different. But the key is, as long as it is tolerable which is a decision only you can make, give it some time. Good luck! Hugs, B.
