X-ray thing

The dental X-ray question just got me thinking on how

safe is it to get mamograms? You know when you go to the

dentist they put a lead apron around your chest and neck to

protect your thyroid. They don't take that precaution with

the mamograms. Does anyone know if that kind of testing

is just as bad for you?

Hi Liz,

I would never get a mammogram after knowing what I know now!I did have a

baseline one done at age 40 before finding out that mammograms have 1000

times the amount of radiation that a regular x-ray has.The doctor freaks

when I tell her I won't have one because my mom has breast cancer. I told

her to find me a thermoscan machine and I will have my breasts checked.

There is low dose film mammography. The more compressed the breasts are the

less radiation exposure there is.

I'll have to read those books that was listed by one member.

I had thought that the rays were less of a problem than regular

X-rays. Guess not. But I don't want anymore problems with

my body trying to detox something it can't. Having problems

detoxing the regular daily stuff. So far there isn't breast cancer

running in my family so I am giving it a thought not to do it.

Please send me anything you have on this! I keep telling my OBGYN that I

don't want another mammogram, and she doesn't get it. I am afraid she will

fire me if I don't get one by this year. If I am armed with articles, I will

feel better about rejecting her. She is OK in every other way.

Thanks so much,

nne

Yes, I know. I am " endowed " . I just had one done in July for a specific

complaint, as I was only 32 and thankfully turned out to be nothing. My double

D friend just had one also for a complaint without an anesthetic. It is painful

and no picnic, but necessary and quick. I also had spot compression views of

the upper outer quadrant of my right breast where there is less " meat " . That

was no picnic either.

In my opinion...your breast health is important as with any other aspect of your

health. It can make a difference between life and death and is important to

take care of. Having radiation once a year to me is not a reason to not get

check-ups. Like I said, thats my opinion for my own health.

There is less radiation that general x-rays. There are also new modern machines

with low dose (radiation) film mammography.

You can also look into " thermography " (hope I spelled that

right). This is a diagnostic test used to test breasts.

I'm told (by a doctor who I think very credible) that it

is acurate, and much safer and more comfortable (as compared

to mamography).

good wishes,

Moria

Hi ,

I'm sorry if I missed the connections between your post and

other posts -- sometimes I repeat things unintentionally,

and probably more so when I'm this far behind (I'm about

a week behind right now).

I think thermography is the right term-- here are a few sites

explaining it

http://www.breastthermography.com/

http://www.iact-org.org/patients/breastthermography/what-is-breast-

therm.html

http://www.cancure.org/breast_thermography.htm

(I just did a google search on " breast thermography " ).

good wishes,

Moria

p.s. I don't know what thermoscan is.

I just did a search on " thermoscan " and I'm getting sites

about some kind of an ear thermometer thing (used for taking

temperature).
