Guest guest
Been off for a bit because I've been off...line, that is. Very frustrating! My DSL providor that is not connected to my phone service can't run without phone service. Since the only people who ever call me on my land line are me, to leave a message to remind me of something, and people trying to sell me more phone service, we decided to do away with it. That's when the fun began. DSL worked for quite awhile after that then the phone company caught on and cut us off. I understand networking enough to believe that there is absolutely no reason I must have a live phone line (or activated, it's still live for 911 calls...which was discovered do not work when we had to call 911 on the neighbors). The only thing I can think is that the POTS owns the DSL equipment and Earhtlink leases from them so it's some form or extortion. I did check the Earthlink site before disconnecting and didn't find anywhere where it said I must have a land line. That reminds me, must go cancel earthlink. So cable it is, but it took us forever to get the package...in fact we still don't have it. I could handle it. Roy could almost handle it, but ended up going out Saturday and buying a laptop with wireless so we could surf at Starbucks (I go there every morning before work...how handy for me...but it's HIS birthday present, really). He got a Vaio....very very nice, and certainly something he deserves. He also got a really cool new Qualcom cell phone, so I have extreme tech envy right now because his stuff is better than mine and that is just wrong on many many levels. Anyhow, we could handle it. Lestat, who is still at large, could apparently handle it. He left us a nice fresh shed among the networking equipment (but of course refused to come out)...bratty little snake. Oh well, keeps the mother-in-law away. Tivo, however, could not handle it. First it just gave us subtle hints, " You know, my programming isn't going to last forever. I really need to check in. " Then it started weeping silently in the corner. Then it started making dire predictions about the end of the world (or TV programming...not sure which is worse), so we had to go out and get a cable modem and connection kit. A mere three hours later we got the blasted thing working on the LAN (router didn't want to give up its old settings, the little turkey). Whew! Email is still tory@... and my website should be back online within a few days. It's there, but not a very good version. I believe I am to understand that the IP lease is good for six months, so there shouldn't be any upcoming interruptions of the site unless the cable goes out...in which case I guess Roy and I will have to talk to each other again! *shudder* So I'm happy because I can get some work done. Tivo is happy because his programming is updated. Lestat is happy because he shed on my router. Roy is happy because he can play Star Wars Battlefront on X-Box live and take pictures with his phone. The dogs are always happy... ~'~'~'~'~'~'~'~'~'~'~'~'~'~'~'~'~'~'~'~'~'~'~'~'~' Tory Klementsen, MCP A+ Career and Technology Educator www.teechur.com www.msteechur.com -The successful person will do the things that the unsuccessful person will not.
