Laxity, here are a few possible alternatives to the University pain

clinic (you may have alrady thought of them).

** the people who posted in alt.cronic.pain and other newsgroups --

contact them and see who they ended up working with after the

University pain clinic failed (this is a good tip for anyone who is

looking for local resources -- look online for people in your area

and see what has worked for them).

** Sequoia Hospital (Redwood City) may still have a pain clinc

Also I found this (don't know if it applies/is still valid):

Calif. Code Section 124960 part j of this law states:

" A patient who suffers from severe chronic intractable pain has

the option to choose opiate medication for the treatment of the

severe chronic intractable pain as long as the prescribing is in

conformance with the provisions of the California Intractable Pain

Treatment Act, Section 2241.5 of the Business and Professions Code. "

And - there has been legal precedent established that refusal by a

physician to prescribe needed opiate medication is a violation of

law. A physician in the Bay Area was successfuly sued under this

statute - and also under statutes prohibiting elder-abuse in the

case of a terminally ill cancer patient who was given inadequate

pain-management. "

A call to the local disablity rights group might also help.
