Guest guest
Hi Sheldon, We have 2 1/2 year old twins, one of whom has RSS. My children were born in February 2000 and were considered at risk of RSV for the following winter. They also had shots once a month to prevent this. I know of non RSS children whom came down with RSV and wound up hospitalized for months. Due to their small size, our children are at a higher risk. Our health insurance paid for the injections for both of our children without any problem. It is well worth it to take precautions against this virus. Judith, Steve, (RSS) and (non RSS) 2 1/2 year old twins. > Hello everyone it's been awhile since i wrote but enjoy reading > everybodies e-mail's.My name is sheldon and the granddfather of > Laikyn from North Dakota. She was diagnosed with rss at birth. She was > born at 35 weeks weighing 2lbs 7oz.Now 5 month's later she is 7lbs > 4oz and 19 1/4 inches. She was given a g-tube before leaving the > hospital 2 month's after birth. We were given what we call some very > bad new's last week when my Daughter was told that Laikyn is at high > risk for R.S.V.(respiratory syncytial virus)and was given a list of > many restriction's including having very little contact outside > there home with people. She is to recieve 1 shot every 28-30 day's > for the next 6 month's at $1400.00 a shot.I have not heard anyone > mention this before so is this something new or does anyone have any > info on this and if so could you forward it to me at > ssime@b... help would be greatly appreciated.Thank you. > Sheldon grandpa of Laikyn 5 month's (RSS)

Guest guest
This has to do with her prematurity and size, not the actual RSS. RSV is a very well-known illness that can be very risky for a premie/tiny baby. Our own daughter was born full-term at 5lbs 2oz and came home from the hospital at 4lbs 11 oz. We were told that until hit 8 pounds, they didn't want her to be anywhere inside other than home, but that taking walks was OK as long as people didn't peer in at her, touch her, etc. It was VERY difficult - our friends all wanted to see her. We just explained that due to her size, germs were especially dangerous. Don't panic. Many babies are at high risk for RSV and never get it. Just take the steps to protect her. Our thoughts are with you.

Guest guest
My daughter also received the RSV synergist (sp) last year. We will be considering it for this year also. We had to have a doctor write a letter to have Janelle covered by insurance for this because she just fell short on some of the insurance criteria to cover it. It was not a problem once they had a letter. I would say it is well worth getting. The RSV can be devastating. -- Jovanovich ****Please note - our NEW e-mail address laura@... Guest guest
Sheldon- My daughter McKenzie recieved the Synagis shot you referred to from October of last year until March. She will be getting the shots this winter also. RSV is a common virus much like the cold, it can affect premmies differently though, which is why it is very important to get these shots. A premmie infant having RSV can have a cough on one day and be in respiratory distress the next day,it is very quick. Is Laikyn covered by insurance? If so check with the insurance company. Most companies pay for the Synagis shots because it is cheaper to prevent RSV than to pay for the hospitalization and treatments for it. Our insurance covers it, which is a blessing. Upon getting in the dr. office you will have a twenty minute wait for the shot to be mixed and then a simple shot in the leg. call your ped. office in advance to make sure that they have it in, many do not stock it based on the price and for the fact that not all of their patients use it. For McKenzie, I always called about a week before she needed it to schedule the appointment and talk to the nurse to make sure they would have it in. It was like clockwork for me,and the month that I got distracted and somehow forgot, the nurse called me thinking something was wrong that i never called. Check with your pediatrician or the nearest NICU, they should have more specific information that they can supply you with. Nica
