Guest guest
Tish and all, I was diagnosed with Grave's disease about a year ago and believe that I was HypoT for about 17 years (I'm 33 now). I'm trying to continue to unravel the mysteries of my body and the reasons why I can't seem to lose weight with out starving myself. Insulin resistance may be a culprit, as may be adrenal issues. Can you recommend a testing center for both insulin resistance and adrenal testing? Can anything be done for insulin resistance? Cutting out carbs and sugars does not help me at all lose weight, which is why I'm leaning towards adrenal issues. At this point, my energy level is pretty good and I feel better than I've had in years. But my body temp is still really low - usually 97.3 or less upon rising, even lower when I'm on my period. I've read a lot of archives and info about the importance of adrenal support as it relates to thyroid issues and realize that it's crucial to add adrenal support before starting thyroid meds. Right now I'm on 3.75mgs of methimazole and 100 mcgs of Synthroid (for the last week). Armour made my TED really bad, so I'm not willing to try it again at this time and gave me terrible stomach cramps that only stopped when I went off it. To be honest, it was really upsetting. I really expected a better reaction to Armour. But depending on my next set of labs in 5 weeks, I may add Cytomel or up my Synthroid since I was still feeling HypoT on 1.25mgs of methimazole. I also take lots of supplements including B Vitamins, Vitamin C, and Symplex F. It doesn't seem to be enough. Please advise. Thanks in advance. Guest guest
I am confused. Why would you take Methimazole AND thyroid replacement? Why not just cut the Methimazole down to allow your own hormones to normalize? What basis are you using for your hypo diagnosis? Symptoms or blood tests? *Artistic Grooming * Hurricane, WV Fat cat? Guest guest
Hi , I've been on Methimazole since last November and also did one attempt of block/replace with 50 mgs of Methimazole w/ Armour (which didn't work well) and then w/ Cytomel & Synthroid. I believe this high dose of Methimazole and months and months of being overmedicated has made me perpetually HypoT. I slowly weaned of the Methimazole and was still feeling HypoT even though I was in the so called normal ranges. I was off the Methimazole for 3 weeks but was still feeling HypoT. My basal temp is still ridiculously low and I can't lose weight unless I eat under 700 calories and work out. Still the weight is slow coming off. Going off meds could make the Grave's antibodies increase and my TED could get worse. I am worried that this dose will make me feel more HypoT but I'm going to wait and see what my numbers are and how I feel in the next 5 weeks until my next appointment. Supplementing with just Sythnroid could also increase my Grave's antibodies and make my eyes worse. It's all very complicated. But I'm doing this variation because I'm hoping it will help my TED. I have a friend who has Grave's and TED and he's been doing the same combo for a few months and it's helped his TED. I initially wanted to do just 1.25mgs of Methimazole, but some others suggested that wasn't enough to suppress Grave's antibodies, which is what I need to do to get to remission and get my eyes better. Some others suggested my Synthroid dose was too high, but I don't want to go lower now. Here are my last labs: 11/10/04 Free T3 = 3.2 (2.4-4.0) Free T4 = 2 (.8-2.7) But I do wonder if some of my HypoT symptoms are the result of adrenal problems and not my thyroid, which is why I posed the question about tests. This has been a very frustrating year of confusion and unclear answers. Docs seem utterly clueless. Wtih TED and Grave's, it makes it more dfficult to medicate just based on symptoms. I would probably be on 100mcg of Synthroid if I didn't have TED or Grave's. Sorry for babbling, SAMMIE > I am confused. Why would you take Methimazole AND thyroid replacement?
