HI,

I just came back from the ER with my husband. He was shot while driving home

from work, and we just found out he has a metallic pellet or a bb (?) in his

head (didn't enter his skull thanks to God!)

He is OK, just a little bit in pain at this time.

The doctor at the ER said he could just " leave it there " , the biggest risk is

for wound infection.

But I am now wondering what type of metal toxicity is he going to get if we

don't get it out!!!! Does anyone know what pellets or bbs are made of? Would it

be safe to " keep the souvenir " ?

O M goodness, Coral! Was he by chance driving on I-40 East near the

Westel Rd exit in Harriman? We were shot at there on the way home

one night. Craig says a pellet used to be made of lead, not sure

now, and BB's are made of copper.

If it's a pellet then it will be lead. If it's a BB then it will

most likely be steel with a coating of copper. I had to look up the

BBs because I didn't know if it was copper or nickle, and when doing

so I found a warning that you should see.

" Lead airgun ammunition contains a chemical known to the state of

California to cause cancer and birth defects (or other reproductive

harm). Do no inhale dust or put pellets in mouth. Wash hands after

handling. "

So hopefully it's not a pellet your husband has in his head.

Either lead or copper over stainless steel(with nickel) have toxic metals that a

significant portion of people are immune reactive to- especially over time.

Adverse effects on game birds hit with shot are well documented, and on

wildlife. Removing shot from a superficial location is likely not a dangerous

or problematic proceedure.

Some are lead, some are copper coated steel.

If you can't tell, you may wish to have it removed. You could

certainly ask the doc how big a deal that is.

The easiest way to find out is if you know the shooter and check what

is in the gun (that is if it was an accident as opposed to random

violence).
