we have had to go thru the SSI thing twice. Once when the kids were

little (both are handicapped). One had Toureetes Syndrome and

mental retardation and the other is Schizophrenic. The first time

they were approved the first time thru. A few years later we lost

the SSI because our income inreased. Once they were adults we

reapplied. On both kids we were denied on the first try. We hired

a lawyer for one and did it on our own for the other. The results

were the same but we didn't have to pay a percentage with a lawyer

with one. One thing to think about is the longer it takes to get

approval, the more money that has accumulated in back payments, the

more money the lawyer pockets. So there not much incentive for the

lawyer to push it thru real fast. On the other hand it is a major

head ache making the appointments, digging up the medical records,

and all the other stuff you have to do. Remember that both of the

handicaps my kids suffered were easily documentable.

One way or the other count on being denied the first time.
