I just had more oral surgery yesterday under general anesthetic. I have lost

count but it is about 7 trips to the O.R. in 7 years. 7 cavities fixed (in

addition to the 20+ which developed between age 30 and 37 - I just turned 38). I

did not have a thing wrong inside my mouth, never had a filling before that. This

coincides with when my EDS started getting worse. My mouth won't freeze because

of the EDS plus my jaw only opens half way sine I had sugery on it to stop it

from dislocating - this is why they have to put me to sleep. The doctor always

says even asleep, it is a problem trying to reach things. I woke up with one

molar unexpectredly missing and was told that in 2 months between xray and O.R.,

it had decayed profoundly. It didn't even hurt! It is only the 2nd molar from

the front but because of jaw and muscle problems in my face (from the jaw surg)

he can't put anything in the space. The poor hygienist couldn't even get all my

teeth cleaned because the muscles in my face and neck completely seized up from

trying to open my mouth and keep it open. The dentist had to finish it in the

O.R. yesterday

I also have many visible cracks on my teeth and the ridiculous sensitivity.

RHea, you aren't alone with these annoying dental problems. I remember other

times oin the list when TMJ problems, dental stuff and non freezing problems are

brought up, that there are lots of us with them, unfortunately.

My father, who I strongly suspect had EDS, had a problem with his teeth cracking

and in some cases breaking. I remember him often being a the dentist and coming

home almost crying in pain because his muoth didn't freeze and his dentist

wouldn't believe it. It is good there is at least some literature on this now. I

have a few articles on dental problems and EDS and there seem to be no shortage.

I remember people on the list mentioning unbelievable amounts of dental work,

periodontal problems.

My big " dental achievement " ? The one tooth I had a root canal in - unexpected

and done while I was asleep. The tooth kept hurting afterwards, I thought if you

had a root canal that that was it for any pain in your tooth. Fortunately

although the dentist didn't know what was causing it, he did sent me to an oral

pathologist who told me I had phantom dental pain. What next? He had pre-printed

patient info and medication instructions. I had to use the zostrix/ xylocaine

stuff for a good 6 moths and it got rid of about 80% of the pain. It seems crazy

- the dental problems those of us with EDS get

Joyce,

You are so brave! I would rather have most any kind of surgery than have

dental stuff done. I hope that you will have a break from it all for a while now

and that there will be no pain.

Rhea, Joyce is right. Lots of us have had TMJ problems, jaw dislocations,

problems with the local anesthesia not working... I was having a gum graft done

and it did not work. I was in tears about that believe me. There are lots and

lots of dental stuff that seems to come from EDS. Wasn't there a type in the

old nosology that was purely for dentally affected people? Dentally

affected,,,,,,,,, hmmm, kinda like that phrase!! hee hee!
