I did some research before my surgery ( 4-25-03). The internet stated

that only about 5% of the surgeons use the monitor. I'm not so sure about

that. My ENT surgeon uses it. On my operative report he refers to how he used

it

all throughout my surgery. I came out just fine. I believe it is just

another insurance for the patient. A Doctor can think he is not close to the

nerve

when in all actuality he is. Personally, I would push for the use of it. If

a Doc becomes insulted over you bringing this up, that would be a red flag

for me!

I don't want to start an argument over nerve monitors...but I find it

interesting that they let you know when the nerve is being irritated...like

nudged. Or cut. But, yes...a doc who is insulted by you asking about it

should be shot!
