Guest guest
Irma, I had a modified radical mastectomy and never took one pain pill in the hospital or at home. I know everyone is different but the pain should be getting better not worse. Maybe there is an infection? I didn't have the chemo you are taking so can't offer any advice on that. I will keep you in my prayers. Hi Everyone, I had my modified radical mastectomy on 11/2/06 and I will be starting chemo this Thursday 11/30. I will be doing bi-weekly dosed densed treatments of a/c and taxol. I will also be taught by my onc on how to inject myself with neuplasta after chemo. My treatment will also be Herceptin for 1 yr. and tamoxifen for 5 yrs. Whew!! On top of this, the pain from the surgery is at times unbearable. I am seeing my surgeon tomorrow to see why the pain keeps getting worse each day. Now with that said, I need advice/information on what to expect on my 1st chemo treatment with a/c on Thurs. Yes, I am nervous but I know this is my next journey in beating my BC! Guest guest
Dear Irma, The first day of chemo is an education session. The treatment nurses are there to educate you on what to expect. They are also your main line of support. Any questions you have they have the answer or will get it for you. Everything that you are given to counteract the side effects will be explained to you. I did not have any symptoms until about my third treatment and it sound like you are on the same regime as I was. I am an old oncology nurse and I gave a lot of treatments. The nurses where I went told me I knew too much, but I still had questions. The did not hesitate to tell nervous patients that that old bald-headed woman over there not only is a patient now but at one time was where they are. Good luck and let us know how you are doing. Guest guest
Hi Irma, I thought Ann had a FAQ for treatments because that question gets asked alot. Who's going with you for your first chemo? You will have many cybersisters with you in spirit. I think they actually require it for some treatments, like Taxol. Even if you feel ok, it will be nice to have someone with you to chat with and get your ice/water/crackers, etc. And you never know how you'll feel, so you do need someone to drive. The chemo session itself is OK; just make sure to have your chemo bag with you (water, snacks, magazine, tunes)and ice chips for the Adriamycin to avoid mouth sores. Some hospitals have TV/VCR/DVD players so you can watch a movie, and you will have plenty of time to do so! Blood work is done before each treatment to make sure you can have the treatment. I had mine done the day of treatment (some go in the day before). While the blood was being tested I got started with fluids and anti-nausea medicine. I had Adriamycin & Cytoxan and that took about 2 1/2 hours. The Adriamycin took 20 mins. and the Cytoxan 45 mins., and the saline and other stuff came before and after. I had a port so there was 5 mins. of saline before and after the treatment. I never felt anything beyond the initial prick to place the line in the port. It was a few hours afterwards that the nausea would set in. Your nurse should give you a checklist of when to call (fever over 101, rashes) If you experience nausea, it won't happen till several hours afterwards, so stay on top of your meds. The medication can make you constipated, so take Sennekot-S the day before treatment and the next few days after. Chemo effects are cumulative. 10-12 days after your first treatment you will probably have to say goodbye to your hair. If you want to wear a wig you should shop for it now to match your current style. I also had dry mouth after a while. The first few treatments I'd only have it a few days, then by the 3rd treatment it was permanent until 3-4 weeks after my last treatment. Gargling with Biotene, a non-alcoholic mouthwash helped. Here's a site that talks more about it and what you can do. http://www.chemocare.com/managing/dry_mouth.asp I understand your anxiousness about your first chemo. Try to think of it as the first notch on your chemo countdown. You will get through them with your family's help and our help. take care,

Guest guest
*Hi Irma,* *I'm glad to see that so many others have written to you with excellent advice. One thing I would add - if you are getting Adriamyacin, be sure to chew ice the entire time it is being infused. My chemo nurses kept popsicles and crushed ice in their freezer and refused to start the infusion until the patient had ice in their mouth. Why? Because it helps prevent mouth sores.* ** *Best of luck on your first - I think you'll be surprised that it's easier than you think!* ** * Ann* *Christmas Chemo Hats: www.cjhats.com* ** *OR on eBay: http://stores.ebay.com/cjhats* ** ** ** > > Hi Everyone, > > I had my modified radical mastectomy on 11/2/06 and I will be > starting chemo this Thursday 11/30.
