Guest guest
> I was watching Good Morning America this morning and Charlie Gibson was interviewing this doctor ( Katz) which he states the antioxidants (Vit C, E, A and Selenium) are worthless to give as a supplement. He says that they may even worsen gut and other problems. He said the best way to get antioxidants is through food (fruits, veggies and grains). It might be on their website abc.com My questions are: > > Are we doing more harm than good with giving these supplements to our kids? In general, and for several reasons, it is best to obtain nutrients thru foods. However, many of our kids are so severely biologically compromised, that they need higher doses than can be physically eaten in a day. Or they need things in a different combination than is found in foods [for example, most foods which contain zinc, also contain copper, because the body needs a balance]. Giving certain items can cause problems in other areas [like the zinc/copper example I gave above]. So you need to understand why you are giving each individual item, and what to watch for to determine when you don't need to give it any more. You might want to think about whether the supplements you are giving are making a difference. If they are, then I think you have an answer of sorts, there. I also think that food is the best way to get nutrients. Not only are they " packaged " together with co-factors, but I'm sure there are a lot of bits we don't know about. Those are a couple of the reasons I think food is superior. However, that does NOT mean that supplements don't have an important place, nor does it mean that everyone can practically fill their needs with food. There are a bunch of reasons why this may not be workable in various cases. good wishes, Moria
Guest guest
Generally, when I hear physicians or regulatory agency or major media bigwigs bash supplements, I feel that such individuals are demonstrating their loyalty to pharmcos and their financial/political/paradigmal leverage. Having sick people that require chronic med purchases is generates far more profits than allowing individuals to find the supplement pattern that optimizes their health. Guest guest
Studies can be very misleading. If you give a person who has bad eating supplements....of course they won't work. From my understanding of this study they included smokers and other people who were not living healthy. Very jaded study. Most of give our kids purified water, organic food and so on. Likewise, all of us should take supplements because farmers don't rotate their crops so land is diminished of nutrients. And I also wonder who funds these studies. Pharmaceutical companies??? Would you rather eat celery and garlic pills to lower your blood pressure (which it does)...or buy blood pressure medicine with its' side effects you will probably have to start taking medicine for? More money for the pharmaceutical companies pjand3kids <pjand3kids@...> wrote: Not in my book......
