>For the rest of the trip he was silent and ultra compliant. When we

got home, he said sorry. I said I accepted his apology. He

said, " can I have a treat now? " " No, " I said, " You can have one NEXT

time, if you don't cock it up again. "

I had a perfect example of what works on these days today after school. We

were at the plaza, and I was looking at racks of seed packets outside the

hardware store. Beside it was a huge skid of fertilizer bags, soil, peat moss,

mulch, etc. All of a sudden, yelled, " Look at me! " There he was, standing

on top of the pile. " DOWN, " I commanded. " NO climbing on the bags. " He got

down, I looked at the rack again and then back at him. He was crawling and

jumping on the bags. I ordered him down and said, " I TOLD you once. You did it

again. NO TREAT FOR YOU. Now get over here. " For the rest of the trip he was

silent and ultra compliant. When we got home, he said sorry. I said I accepted

his apology. He said, " can I have a treat now? " " No, " I said, " You can have

one NEXT time, if you don't cock it up again. "

Writing it out, it strikes me that this is darn near NT...isn't it?

Hmmmm.

It wasn't until I wrote it out that I realized truly how much better/easier

it is now! Probably because I havea short temper and a low tolerance for

frustration, it feels a lot more frustrating when it's happening.

One thing I think got to this point is that I never, NEVER explain. I

don't tell him why he shouldn't climb on the fertilizer, I just bark the

command. That was the first thing I learned in speech therapy, and it's one

thing I've never let go of. So he's had 3 1/2 years of being barked at to

learn the drill! LOL. He's VERY responsive to the bark. I guess I've got

him conditioned. ;-)
