Guest guest
Hi All! I am new to the group and it's comforting to know that I am not alone in my fibroid hell! I am 36 years old and I was diagnosed with uterine fibroids in February 14, 2002. When I went to see my doctor for my post op visit on March 7,2002, she informed me that I was 2 1/2 months pregnant. This left me with a difficult decision to make; either keep the baby or have an abortion. At my age and taking in consideration the odds of me having another chance of getting pregnant, I chose to have my baby. It was the most horrific pregnancy!! I bleed almost everyday which led me to the assumption that I was losing my baby; however, it was the baby's growth pushing against the smaller of the many fibroids causing them to rupture. I had more bad days than good ones. After my first trimester, it seemed every day I was in pain! It was hard to even get out of bed on some days the pain was so great. I was off & on moderate bed-rest for weeks at a time. One day in May 2003, I was driving to work and had to pull off the road due to the pain! Thereafter, I was completely taken off work and put on disability. In early August, I was just about 27 weeks I went for my regular ultrasound only to find out that I am now have a placental abruption due to the baby-to-fibroid ratio. The baby was rapidly running out of room to grow! Crying and petrified with fear, I was immediately admitted to the hospital unknowingly for the duration of my pregnancy. My doctor kept advising me that I would have to have a c-section due to a fibroid blocking my birth canal. Also, if during the c-section she could remove the fibroids she would but if I began to bleed uncontrollably then a hysterectomy would be performed immediately! I told her that will never happen! After almost 72 hours of labor, I had my baby on October 3, 2002 by VAGINAL delivery!!! Now I am ready to have my fibroids removed but I am having a difficult time selecting a procedure. I am leaning more so towards the Uterine Fibroid Embolization (or Uterine Artery Embolization) but I am not positively convinced that this is safer than the other procedures. I may want to have another baby but I'm not sure if that will be possible after the UFE. Is there anyone out there that has had this procedure? And if so how was the recovery time? Did your doctor advise you not to have this procedure if you wanted to have children? Lastly, did your insurance cover this procedure? HELP!!
