I think most doctors will tell you that a week is probably sufficient, but that most of us need a practice week. I can tell you from personal experience that second part is true. Having read and written so much about the LID over the years, the last time I did it, I didn't follow my own advice by preparing in advance, and I literally stood in the middle of the kitchen for the first few days, trying to figure out what to eat. Once I got into gear, it was easy. There aren't very many studies on the LID, and how long it takes to completely rid the body of nutritional iodine is most certainly a YMMV area. Being hypo makes everything clear out more slowly, so it's likely that following the diet for a week before a Thyrogen scan (when we're not hypo) would be sufficient.
