Guest guest
Hi Nadia and Molly - For your 6 year old I would recommend going to a ROCK group meeting. (It stands for " Raising Our Celiac Kids " ). ROCK was started by Danna Korn in Escondido and has flourished all over the nation. The local leaders that I am aware of are Christie Scales , and Marcoly <jmarcoly@hotmail,com>. Christie is in Seal Beach and is in Anaheim Hills, but I think they go all over for their interesting get-togethers. They do all the notification by e-mail to keep costs down. CDF is located in Studio City. Contact them at . They also have a web site: www.celiac.org. I have met with them a few times and haven't been real impressed with their friendliness. CSA has a chapter (#14) in Orange County. You can call them at . They have meetings about every other month, have speakers several times a year, and also go out to eat several times a year. As to eating out, I will tell you what I know in the Santa and Miracle Mile area. Then give you some " fast food/chain " types of places. I can't tell you everything I have. I'm not too computer savvy yet, and I have to type it all out every time. If you tell me what area you're in, Nadia, I might be able to be more specific. Guest guest
Hi all - I hope I did help some of you by typing all that out. I do it each time I get a request, because I'm too dumb to put it on the computer and then send it out when it's requested by someone. I put than statement in about A Votre Sante having spelt pasta on the menu because I didn't want anyone ordering it. They have it on the menu as " Wheat free pasta " , and of course, it isn't. I love the Callendar's on wilshire, I eat there whenever I go to the Art Museum, which is fairly often. I'm going there next week. If it stays so hot, I'll probably just have a salad. I haven't had a problem at Baja Fresh. My experience has been that it is a nice clean, fresh place to eat, but I'm not happy that they recently changed their menu, and I can't have my enchiladas verde any more! No I wouldn't like water on my salad, either. They probably didn't drain the lettuce well. As to my speech when I go out to eat. I usually ask them if they know what gluten-free means. They never do, so I say " I can't eat wheat, rye oats or barley, but we'll just worry about wheat now " because I never would order anything that had the other grains. I NEVER order soup in a restaurant. Then I go over the things that might be dangerous. If I'm ordering pasta, I ask them to be sure to cook it in fresh water in a clean pot. I ask for no croutons or wontons on a salad, all the things that everyone knows, but we don't always think of. I don't worry too much about cross-contamination, and haven't been poisoned for about 2 or 3 years. I have recently discovered that the Old Spaghetti Factory has g-f pasta, and most of their sauces are g-f. The pasta is made from corn, and it's a little grainy tasting, I think, but fun to go there and order pasta! Also Pomodoro has g-f pasta. It's made from lentils, and was very good. I've only had it once, I had a vegetable, oil and garlic sauce on it. It wasn't a wonderful sauce, but again, fun to be able to go out and order pasta. I eat out a lot, and will continue to. I wish all of you out there many happy meals out, and if I can help you in any way, please ask me to do so.
