We have grass (well... mostly mowed weeds) front and side, with wine barrels full of geraniums on both sides of the front door. In the back, however, where I would love to grow lots of veggies, we just have no sun where there is dirt, and no dirt where we have sun. So...I garden in large wooden packing crates that I find in the dumpster areas behind importers places around town. A lot of computer parts importers, and machinery importers have stuff shipped from overseas in wooden crates, and they are about 3' x 6' x 24" deep. Perfect for growing tomatoes, beans, herbs, and flowers. I even grew one very big one full of different kinds of designer potatoes one year. That was fun to harvest. My niece's nice hubby found some used piano dollies for me, and we put two of the biggest crates on those so I can push them around to follow the sun when the seasons move along. That way, my growing season is extended to almost the full amount of time local growers with lots of sun have for their crops. I love to dig in the dirt. I hate having to do it at night, though, because of the bugs. I should take out some stock in whoever makes OFF! repellants. LOL It's the only one that works on my skin. The rest are like putting BBQ sauce on a steak, the bugs just like me better. LOL Once April is over, and the surprise hail storms quit, I can start planting for this season. The spring bulbs are all finished, and the roses have already finished their first bloom. Need to deadhead everything and start fresh for summer. Well, enough from me. Alas .......I have no yard anymore.......just a teeny little apt......and a teeny little patio......But as long as there is room for a few pots of flowers.....I'll be content! Re: Patio gardens... Guest guest Posted April 18, 2004 Report Share Posted April 18, 2004 C., My sister, Kathy, has only a small balcony on her apartment frontside, so she gardens in a myriad of pots, crates, and whatever she can find. She also comes and plants bulbs in my crates every Fall so we have lots of color in the Spring. She took horticulture in college, and always should have been a farmer's daughter, I think. Her boyfriend is caretaker on a small ranch near us, and she works in the garden there every weekend. Wish I was able to do it, too. I miss diggin' in the dirt. I had planned to spend a week up the coast later on this summer, but with my health so iffy, I may just stay at home and garden instead. We can make short trips to the beach, redwoods, etc. and do our campout thing for one day instead of several. There is a company here that rents out camp trailers, and they park them for you so all you have to do is show up with your clothing and food. Everything else is in the trailer. With the cost of a campsite, a week's rental is less than $600, and you are right in the park of your choice without the hassle and work of setting up a tent and all. I never thought I'd stoop to it, but I have had to give up tents, open fire cooking, etc. because I just don't have the energy, or can't breathe around all that smoke all the time. I used to be able to cook three meals a day over the fire, and loved it. Must have been the pioneer ancestors coming out all over me...Huh? I even loved cutting firewood, building a shelter, and all that roughing it jazz. Sure is a comedown to have to stay inside a metal box at night. Hmmmph. So, I'll take what I can get and like it, as my mother used to say. LOL Gardening in crates works for me, and keeps me busy when I get restless and want to do more than my body is willing to allow.
