But my main Dr says not to do it unless it is absolutly neccessary. Because I have had 15 previous surgeries and the last two I've had they had trouble with my heart stopping they say being put under anastesia to much is dangerous. My teeth dont bother me but my dentist wants them out he does not know much about EDS I am trying my beast to explain it but dont know really what to tell him. I was just curious if anyone else here has had the same thing done and if so did you have any trouble? ---------------- I have had it done surgically twice in my 20's - both sides of the mouth at different times. I had to have it done because they were impacted - roots growing sideways under the adjoining teeth. This would have evenutally caused problems with other teeth. The only problems I had were post-surgery when I ended up with dry socket - both times, which ranked right up there on my life-time pain scale. The question I would ask is " why does your dentist want it done? " You say they are not bothering you. Are they doing something (like mine were impacted)? Or is he just one of those folks who think by a certain time of life you should get rid of them? My personal advice would be that unless your dentist has some compelling, legitimate reason why they NEED to come out, go with the advice of your doctor. He is basically telling you that with your past surgical history that you have a significant side-effect risk with anesthesia that outweighs any benefit of having your wisdom teeth removed UNLESS it is absolutely necessary that they be removed. From what I have read at different times in the past, you have far greater risk with full scale dental anesthesia than you do with hospital anesthesia because of the relative levels of training of those controlling it. And even in hospital settings, the relative risks are far higher from anesthesia related problems than they are from the surgeries themselves. Back in the good old days when the dentist gave you sweet air just for a cleaning! Don't know if they would " allow " this now but if it is REALLY necessary to have them out it may be a viable option for you (as long as you can get sufficiantly numb with the novociane). Hugs, B. Guest guest Posted March 28, 2004 Report Share Posted March 28, 2004 Crystal, If your old dentist didn't feel that they were a problem, then perhaps they aren't. I'd get a second opinion. Can I ask your age? I had mine out when I was 17, they were horribly impacted and the roots were wrapped around and firmly embedded into the jaw bones. They had to be surgically removed and I did heal very well afterwards with absolutely no issues - I remember it well because I times the surgery for right after Christmas holidays in high school, when exams were being written all in hopes that I could be too ill to write them! It back-fired. If you feel that this is not an urgent issue and if there is no compelling evidence that the teeth are posing a problem, then I'd seek a second opinion or just simply say no to the surgery until an issue that you are aware of really does arise. But my concern is, if your heart stopped beating during the last two surgeries, I definitely would not want any anesthesia until a cardiologist has checked this out thoroughly. Especially since most dentist's do this procedure in their office, where the is no one or the appropriate equipment needed to handle such a situation as one's heart stopping. If it doesn't hurt (your teeth)don't fix it!!!!!!!! Jill and I both have info for dentist's in regard to EDS and the teeth! OK? Jill may have more. Sincerely, S. They weren't up yet, the dentist just wanted them out to make room for my other teeth. After I had them out, I had braces for a year. No problems with the anesthesia, they did it IV. But I do usually have trouble with the Novocain not working when I have other work done. The only problem with my surgery was my roots were very long, wrapping around my jaw. They took out part of the jawbone to get the teeth out. After the surgery, the dentist said to use the pain pills, but I got very sick. I didn't eat or drink and ended up in the ER to get some IV fluids as I was very dehydrated. No problems with bleeding. I have the hypermobility type of EDS. Guest guest Posted March 28, 2004 Report Share Posted March 28, 2004 I have had my wisdom teeth sugically removed (I only had 3 and they were coming in crooked and even growing horizontal in my jaw), They had to cut the inside of my cheeks and such to get them out (i had it done under general anasthetic and had only a little swelling) I know others who have had it done under twilight or locals (NOT EDS'ers though) etc. But I am SCARED/PARANOID about dentists and get so scared etc that General was the only way for me (I even had them do all other needed dental work (fillings etc) while under anasthetic before they did the surgery). I also get irritated with the cookie cutter mentallity a lot of doctors have toward their patients. I personally feel that any doctor that doesn't listen to me and treat me uniquely needs to be replaced with a new doctor. Not sure if you can, but if this dentist won't listen to you and isn't interested in learning about EDS then you might want to look for a new doctor. Used lots and lots and lots of novacaine and still could feel quite a bit, but that's the way it always seems to be.... My daughter had some baby teeth removed last summer -- she got novacaine which worked the first time but not the second time. She also had nitrous oxide both times (at the pediatric dentist they call it Mr Nose).
