According to The Telegraph, the solvent identified as Ethylene Glycol Methyl Ether or EGME, has been found to boost oestrogen and progesterone activity in cells by up to 10 times. Women who are on the Pill or who are exposed to hormone replacement therapy may be at increased risk because EGME might trigger breast or ovarian cancer. Dr McDonnell, the lead researcher of the study, said that the chemical might also increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. " These data should prompt caution for patients who are exposed to either of these chemical compounds while taking any oestrogen or progesterone-containing medications, such as hormone therapy, oral contraceptives or tamoxifen for breast cancer, " he said.
