Oh, ellen, I thought my spider friend was scary but this beats it

easily. SO glad he was safe, and great that those other moms stepped in to

protect him.

Oh My, that is very scary!! I am so glad your son is OK. How old is he? My son

was " returned " by a neighbor at my mom's house last summer. He was maybe

20 months, we were all inside and the man knocks on the door, holding my son!! I

almost died. I too could only cry and called the man later to say thank-you. My

mom lives in the country and someone had left a door open and went

out.....

I never felt so bad in my life so My heart goes out to you!!

My scare today

We had a playgroup at a park nearby. was being fine. Part of the

area is surrounded by bushes, with little spaces to cut between to head to

the tennis courts, etc. would go out one, and around to another and

come back in. No biggie, I have to give him some space. Well one time I

couldn't see him through the branches, so I called him. Nothing. I get up

and since I can see over the bushes, scan the area. Nothing. Walk towards

the last spot I see him, and cut between the bushes, scanning all the while.

Nothing. I walk to the side and see another mom who knows him yell if he's

up at the other end. She gets the moms looking that way.

I turn and head towards the grassy area (and the street). I see some lady

carrying a kid wearing a gray outfit (which he was wearing) I start yelling,

or should say, continue yelling his name and take off running. I could tell

she wasn't trying to take off with him, and she was on the SIDEWALK!! So,

as I continue running and yelling (no easy feat for this obese 37-year-old

woman), they turn the corner to the side street to the park. I see another

woman near their car on a cell phone. They see me and ask if I'm his mom,

and I say yes. The one on the phone says, " Never mind, we found his

mother " , and hangs up. I grab him, squeeze him and just start crying. The

one that had him said that he was in the MIDDLE OF THE ROAD!!! This is a

fairly busy, 3 lane (each direction) road. I was so thankful he wasn't

hurt. All I could do was stand there holding him and cry. I don't even

know if I said thank you. My heart was pounding and I didn't even know if

I could make it back to the car.

I can't WAIT for school to start and he will be where I at least ASSUME he's

safe all day. What if he'd walked directly in front of a car? What if

somebody hadn't been paying attention to their driving? The speed limit

there is 35, but people regularly go 50 or more down that street.

We came home and both of us took a nap.

We're doing fine. I just I need to keep remembering that he's NOT typical

and if something catches his eye, he's going to run and he's SO fast.

Calling him just isn't enough. I need to watch him better, and even be

overprotective. I guess I was trying to give him a little too much room to

grow. :-(

Oh, how scary and horrible that had to be for you! How are you doing

now? I'm so glad everything turned out alright!

ellen,

I've done that too, given too much room to grow with scary

consequences. It's a fine line to balance between not hovering and being

appropriately protective. Sometimes I fall off that line. But like

Roseanne says, " If the kids are alive by the end of the day, I've done my

job. "

I'm so glad you found him safe and sound!

did that to me once in a mall. He ran out of the store we were

in and went about 8 stores down to another shoe store. I thought I

was going to have heart failure!

Oh, ellen, what a heart stopper.

Did I ever tell you about the time the police knocked on my door at 7am

because I was asleep and was on the roof?

I know your terror. (((hugs)))

He was in kindergarten, so he was...4. He unlatched and cranked open a

window that had the screen removed, and crawled out onto the roof

overlooking the driveway in his pajamas, although there was frost. A cop

was passing by " on her way to get her morning coffee " -- we live one block

down from the coffee shop -- and she saw him up there.

I was fast asleep; he was on alternate days at school and it wasn't a

school

day.

Children's Aid came for a visit after that, but luckily the guy who came

had

previously worked at a residence for autistic kids and knew all about the

escape factor -- thank goodness!!!
