Guest guest
Tuna This is what we've tried which even though it didn't stop totally is has helped. is now eating carrots and celery. Every time I see her chewing I take whatever it is away and replace it with veggies. They cannot be cut they must be whole or they are of course rejected. Another thing I've been doing is putting whole freeze pops the kind that come in the plastic sleeves? Put that in a container with a straw and she sucks it down. This would also work with applesauce (but she's allergic) or yogert. Milkshakes or fruit smoothies also. We also do ALOT of oral motor work in the morning when we do lotion and joint compresses. I needed to make this part of her day. (We do take weekends off however). She was chewing on her hands also and I was very concerned. This has stopped. She is still eating sand but she's just doing that to stick it to me Hugs

It really helped Mitchel (and saved his clothes, and towels, and blankets..although my kitchen chairs are pretty knawed..) But yes, it seems to be a phase. Although Mitchel has phased in and out of this about 3 times now. He's currently not chewing anything and is fine. But a few months ago.. wow.. everything he touched was chewed on. Good luck. Guest guest
I have no idea if it is a phase or not. I do know that Greggory's friend, Andre(who is sooooooo totally NT) chews. In fact Tonya(his mom) was complaining to me about how Andre chews on everything. He chews holes through his sleeves. He chews on his clothes, he chews on his toys, he chews on his baseball glove(which happened during practice and that's how we started talking about this). She told me she caught a glimpse of Andre in the rearview mirror of her car chewing on something and she turned her head to see him throw whatever it was on the ground. I have no idea why he chews and neither does she. Greggory was never a chewer and Alec has always been one. Weird. Jacquie H He's chewing on everything in sight! has really opened up socially, but his chewing is reaching epidemic proportions. Things he's had in his mouth in the last 48 hours: 2 plastic bags 4 shirt sleeves and 2 collars tape countless sheets of paper his shoe laces 3 bead bracelets his fingers his toes my fingers (ouch!) poster gum (which I use to put up posters in his room because he likes to chew on tacks!) He's driving me buggy! His OT suggested having him brush his teeth more often and freezing his juice before putting it in his lunch box. She didn't like the idea of chewellry because " boys don't wear jewellry " and she didn't want to " stand out " . Yeah right. Like a boy with both sleeves in his mouth bouncing up and down and humming doesn't stand out. And almost every boy in his class wears necklaces or friendship bracelets. Well, I tried the chewellry and he didn't like it. The only thing that works at all is to redirect him with frozen food like perogies or french fries. And he does have a leather necklace that he chews at school. Meanwhile, I have to watch him like a hawk to make sure he doesn't put anything dangerous in his mouth (like those plastic bags, eek!). This is just a phase, right? Guest guest
rowan too - it started with chewing a hangnail on his finger a couple of weeks ago. he has chewed and rechewed that same finger raw. he also chewed and picked other fingers but not to the same extent. he has now taken up chewing as a full time hobby - shirt sleeves, socks (whilst wearing them), he even chewed a hole in the speaker of dh's truck this weekend. hence the new parenting phrase " Are you eating my truck again?? " towels seem to be a particular favourite. arrrrrggggggghhhhh!!
