Guest guest
Dear Loraine, Specially with one side hurting more than the other and with it causing headache and neck pain, it sounds like an occipital nerve inflammation. Don't know whether you may also have a vertabre subluxed but if you can get the occipital nerve dealt with and you do have a subluxation, it may go back in by itself like mine did (took 2 wks after getting the nerve under control). I highly recommend using either a broom stick or something else hard and putting it at the base of skull/ top of neck on left side. Best bet is to lie on the floor (hard surface). The rounded broom handle fits in to that area well, though you will probably have to hold it there. You will feel when you have it on the right spot. Hold it there till the pain goes away and then move it around a bit to see if you find more pain and then hold there. Do this a few times a day. I had problems when I was home alone getting up and down off the floor (specially at first as I couldn't lie down due to the strain on my neck) so I used a large flashlight and braced it against the couch while I sat and watched TV. I used this pressure method, along with ice and the collar upside down and had the nerve pretty much under control within 3 days. (Just be careful as you can easily flare it right up again so don't rush into things for a while). I saw a neurologist who dx'd this. I was told that my pain management doc could inject the nerve (nerve block) so if you have either type of doc I suggest you go see them. Getting one shot may fix this whole thing up for you! I am not particularly one for 'homeopathic' medicine but this pressure thing really worked. My doc, who is a regular D.O., told me it was an old conservative approach. Hugs, B.
