Guest guest
Hi , When we visited the American Museum in Bath Simon's parents picked up a fun dictionary of US to UK terms, and it made the drive home fun. When we visit the US, I think before every question to make sure I will be understood. By the end of a holiday I am referring to prams as strollers and bathrooms as rest rooms - which I even started doing back home in a TGI Fridays (I guess I just re-programmed myself :-) Which brings me to your email - I am wondering where in the UK you lived. I am in Southampton (south coast) and I am wondering if your language problems were in another area of the country, and you are showing area differences. To me a napkin is a serviette and nothing else. I ask for a napkin when I want a serviette. A feminine napkin I call a towel or sanitary towel or pad. And, out of politeness I enquire where the bathroom is at a restaurant (but I have never not been understood and everyone I know asks for the bathroom). Failing that I would ask " where are the toilets? " , or " where are the ladies? " , but never " where is the loo? " (My Mum would have a heart attack if she thought I asked for the loo in public!). Of course, you could just be picking up on class differences in the UK :-) BTW - Can you get s Salt and Vinegar crisps in the US? I couldn't live without them! Oh well, you have stuff we cannot get like Graham Crackers for S'mores and Twix Flavour Smuckers! Things are improving though, as our local supermarket Asda (now part of the " Wallmart family " ) stocks Hershey Kisses and Reeses Cups, so Simon is really happy! Love, Fay. Guest guest
Hi, We lived in Lytham St Annes - Lancashire. Just south of Blackpool. I know, the language differences change in England when you cross the street! hehe No, we can't get s. But, Our Lays potato chips make a salt and vinegar. The s are better. We do miss all those varieties. My husband really liked the prawn cocktail. I go to a store here called the British Pantry. It's about 45 minutes drive. They have a lot of British stuff - and I get the kids the sweets they miss. Mint Aero, Cadbury Flakes, and a bunch of others. I still haven't found a Lion bar - my husband's favorite. You know - it's hard toffee covered in the most wonderful chocolate. The 2 things we miss the most are Heinze beans - which I can find in some specialty shops - but they cost about $2.00 a can. I usually buy a case of them at a time. And, it's hard to find the Chicken Tikka Masala cooking sauce here. We love the Patkas kind. I can find it sometimes though, and it's a big treat when I do. I always pick up some sausage rolls at the British Pantry too! I can get bacon there, but it is outrageously expensive. Your bacon is the best. Nothing better than an all day breakfast, if you ask my husband and son. If I can add some heinze beans to breakfast, then they are happy. My kids have introduced beans on toast to all their friends, and they all love it. I've even given some of their friends some cans. I'm thinking about writing a letter to heinze, cause they should sell them here in all the stores. Everyone who tries them, loves them. You can't get any beans here that are as good as yours. They are the best. I can't even eat any others! When I first moved there, I thought the food was horrible. Then, I discovered the good things. I can't beleive I miss a lot of it. I never thought I would. Boy - I would love a bacon sandwich right now. I actually have a bottle of brown sauce - but it doesn't taste good without your bacon! Hugs, Reeses peanut butter cups are my favorite!!!!! But, all our other chocolate (hershey's kisses included) doesn't even compaire to your chocotale! Yours is so much better! Guest guest
Your bacon is the best. Nothing better than an all day breakfast, if you ask my husband and son. ----------- I know what you mean. When I cashed freguent flyer miles to go to Scotland last November, I really splurged (partly for screwing up earlier in the year and not taking the family to Hawaii on miles as I had promised). In short, I cashed enough so the wife and I were able to fly from Seattle to London, non-stop, on British Airways ... in First Class. That was something that has to be experienced to be believed, absolutely incredible. It made any domestic First Class ticket feel like steerage. At any rate, part of the menu selection was the All Day Breakfast. Ignorant tourist that I was, I just thought it meant that breakfast was offered at any time during the flight and not an actual menu entree. But when breakfast time rolled around, that was what I ordered, except I told the stewardess " no bacon - I hate bacon. " Well, both of us ordered the same breakfast except Darlene LOVES bacon. I took one look at her plate and said " gimme some of that. " About my second bite, the stewardess walks by and says " I thought you didn't like bacon? " I still feel that the British custom of drinking warm beer is utterly barbaric ... but boy do they know how to make bacon.
Guest guest
Hi , Mint Aero????? Is that the chocolate with a thin layer of milk chocolate outside and the airy green stuff inside? Just like in those airy milk chocolates, but it is bright green??? I got those when I visited my sister when she lived in South Africa, and I loved the stuff... I have not been able to forget about it. Actually I thought about it the other day, I am going to South Africa in September, and I sure will have to go look for it then... Can't you get Lion bars in the US??? Now we can even get Lion cereal here... Maybe I need to go buy some Lion bars and send them to you??? Aase Marit >I go to a store here called the British Pantry. Guest guest
I too love baked beans and ONLY eat Heinz. They are BIG here in OZ and you can buy them EVERYWHERE. But I am odd in my liking in that I HATE them when they are heated or have been heated. I eat them COLD preferably out of the can from the fridge. I do eat them on toast but again they have to be cold. You can also add them to other things stews and stuff too. If I was you I would write to Heinz and see about them getting them into local stores or at least to see if they will allow you to import them. Guest guest
haha! I don't like the warmer beer either. Gives me a stomach ache. We flew first class on SAS when we moved to England, courtesy of Boeing. It was amazing! And, they flew us home first class on SAS when we moved back. Much better going to Europe than to the US. That flight was so great, and the food was fantastic! I never imagined a plane flight could be so splendid. Hugs,

Guest guest
No, it just has hard toffee and a coating of chocolate. Maybe I've got the wrong name, cause now I'm thinking that the lion bar is what you described. I'll have to ask Tom what the name of it is. Yea, I think I've got the wrong name.
