If your ANA is negative, and selenium seems to be helping you - there is a possibility that you may have undiagnosed thyroid issues. Selenium is very good in helping thyroid hormone conversion. Quite often auto-immune thyroid disease will mimic lupus symptoms. It's unbelievable how bad you can feel with untreated thyroid porblems. And the general attitude is that it's a simple to diagnose, easy to handle disease.

Don't traust the simple basic TSH tests. You can have a normal TSH and be told everything is "fine". What you need to do regarding your thyroid testing is to ask for the 2 different thryoid antibody tests. They are called the thryoid peroxidase antibody and anti-thyroglobulin antibody. If these are positive - you may have something called Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

If I had believed the doctors that my thyroid testing was "normal" - I never would have found this out. Instead I searched on the internet and found a doctor who would test these antibodies. The next hurdle would be to find a doctor that will treat on symptoms and not on lab values. And, quite often the Synthroid doesn't help and you have to fight even harder to get the natural thryoid hormone called Armour. Armour contains all the hormones your body naturally makes T1,T2,T3, T4 and calcitonin. Synthroid only contains synthetic T4. There are so many testimonials on the yahoo thyroid lists about Armour.

As for me - my lupus related testing is coming back positive (ANA, anti-DNA, and elevated sed rate) so despite my thyroid issues - I am presently classified as lupus suspect.

Good luck to you - what do you think you are going to do now? You can't give up on the search to feel better!

ana test

well my ana test came back withing normal ranges, so I guess that means the lupus is negative? I still show signs of it, not hat I want to, so I am a bit confused. On the brain fog thing you are all talking about, I have found that taking vitamins like beta carotene and selenium has helped me immensely! I have actually been doing much better now. good luck!
