Hi Shaunah and other interested ladies:

Do not feel bad - the people at the U/Rochester study for mifepristone are being

EXTREMELY PICKY! Although I live in Orange County, NY (about 300 miles away),

my daughter attends an upstate university about 20 minutes away from Rochester.

So, when I wrote them to tell them that I would be able to stay with my daughter

for the required visits, they STILL wouldn't buy it. I think they should

welcome anyone that makes the commitment to make the required number of visits!

Any ideas or suggestions from anyone else out there? (Besides, there may just

not be enough local women to participate, or who even might have heard of the

study - so they should seriously lighten up their distance requirements)! Good

luck everyone! Edie

Footnote from Carla: I've deleted the original correspondence from Starlene to

Edie from this email. Please, please, please do not forward correspondence to

As for their requirements regarding proximity to the study...this is a critical

issue for them as they cannot afford a single patient to drop out of the study

and this was definitely a problem with the last go around on their trials.

Given that 50% will be given a placebo, it will be noticeable to those women

when their fibroids don't shrink and symptoms don't disappear. There is a HIGH

likelihood of those in the placebo group choosing to simply drop out of the

study and an even HIGHER likelihood if they live some distance from Rochester

and figure out they are on placebo. Why would anyone choose to continue

traveling 300 miles or so for what they know is a placebo? Disappointment alone

for drawing the short end of the stick on which arm of the study they're in is

enough to make anyone simply drop out of the study! The researchers involved

with this study hope to desperately stem that tide of women dropping out of the

study by at least recruiting those closest to home and doing whatever is

necessary to keep them going.

As for the # of participants...my guess is there will be a looooooonnnnnnggggg

waiting list from women living close at hand to Rochester. The interest is so

great that many, many women have been patiently waiting for this trial to begin

recruitment. Carla Dionne
