Guest guest
Hi Tamara. I'm so glad to hear Ebony's appointment went so well and that you found a dentist who knew enough about Autism to work with her. That's wonderul news. I will certainly keep you and Ebony in my prayers for the upcoming hospital visit. Can you tell me what you did to find a dentist who was so good with ASD kids? Hugs... Good morning everyone! Ebony had her very first dental appointment yesterday. I just have to say the staff was excellent. We went to a pediatric dentist that was referred to us by our pediatrician. They KNEW autism! They were very prepared and knew what to expect. The hygenist just brushed her teeth with a toothbrush while I held her down and then very quickly the doc looked in her mouth while the hygenist helped me hold her. It was done in a matter of minutes. She has a couple of small cavities in the back teeth. We are scheduled to go to the hospital in July. They will put her completely under. They'll get the x-rays done and do any and all work that needs to be done, including sealant. She can go home the same day. I really feel relief that they were soooo understanding. They asked about brushing her teeth and I kinda chuckled. The hygenist then stated, " Ah, she has sensory troubles with that, huh? " Amazing! Anyway, just thought I'd let you all know how it went. Talk to you all later. Have a great day today, everyone! Guest guest
Tamara: I am so glad that you found such a super dentist. I know all about those dental visits. Sigh. My dentist still tells me that Putter had dental caries because I nursed him too long. Sigh. I COULD NOT BRUSH HIS TEETH. Stupid idiot. Guest guest
Tamara, I am late in replying to this.my apologies. had dental surgery after his dental visit two years ago, and it went off without a hitch in terms of the procedures, anesthesia and recovery time. (Don't get me started about the dentist not informing me of everything he was doing in surgery.) I know it's worrisome when our babies have surgeries, but I'm sure Ebony will be fine. I'm glad you've found such a wonderful dentist for her. One less stress I think. Maggie

Guest guest
Salli, I swear that is what I was expecting. I really lucked out I think. I thought they would so not get it that she does not allow tooth brushing. Is your dentist a pediatric dentist? These guys really seemed to know autism and what it entails. It was so much better than I thought it would be. Guest guest
My pediatrician treats a lot of asd kids and so I asked her for a reference and she told me this one. They are a pediatric dentistry which is a big difference. They are also located in Madison, which is one of the larger cities around here. So there is probably more of a pool of autistic kids going there. I lucked out for sure. I would definetely ask though when you make your appointment how familiar with autistm is the doctor and how comfortable they feel treating special needs kids, in particular autistic kids. Good luck to you. These guys really seemed to know > autism and what it entails. Alas, he is. I think he just was so disapproving of my continuing to nurse Putter. If Putter had been weaned, he probably would have put it down to sensory issues. People can be so weird about extended nursing. Some autistic kids are insanely hard to nurse and some autistic kids are insanely hard to stop nursing. Salli
Guest guest
That makes sense! Same as potty training....why would they want to change what is working fine the way it is?? lol.
