Yes, I have had many....it is like a colonoscopy but just down the throat and

they take a look at your stomach and duodenum (upper portion of the small

intestine). it is very quick and easy. I think it is safer than the

colonoscopy, but of course that depends on the person I suppose.

Hi all --

I had my doctor's appt today. This was with a new GI doctor and I was impressed

with him. I gave him an article on VEDS and he was actually familar with it and

thanked me for it.

Anyway, because of the problems I have been having (abdominal pain, black

stools, diarrhea, and on and on), he wants to do a colonoscopy and an EGD test.

I have acid reflux (for over 10 years) and he wants to check everything. He

understands about the risks involved but feels we really need to find out what

is going on. So, it's scheduled for April 26. I have had a colonoscopy before

and everything went fine - but have never had the EGD test and was wondering if

anyone has had this and what to expect?

Thanks all,

Love, Patti

Like you, Patti, I've had the colonoscopy but not the EGD. I wish you much

luck, and you will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers! You hang in

there!

Patti,

I'm so glad the GI Dr. appointment went over so well. The EGD, uses a

lighted scope like the colonoscopy to go down your throat and look at the

stomach and duodenum. They will numb your throat with a spray that tastes

horrible, eliminates the gag reflex, then give you the " I don't care

medicine " You will fall off to sleep and not feel or remember much of

anything. They will look for ulcers and may take some biopsies too. Good

Luck! Hope this helps and keep us informed and remind me too when the date

gets closer.

LOL!

Sorry! I couldn't help it.

Just wanted you to know that I too have had several of these. They are very

useful for the GI and can help in the evaluation of many things that normal

tests cannot *see*.

My only advise is when you have to drink the Go-Lightly .... DRINK IT ALL.

Don't stop and think that is enough ... do the whole cleaning out sequence as

directed. You don't want to have any residue left for the biopsies.

Hi Patti,

You have a thorough doctor and thsi is so important and good to hear.

The EGD test he refers to is a test that involves visually examining the

lining of the esophagus, stomach, and upper duodenum with a small camera

(flexible fiberoptic endoscope) which is inserted down the throat. For this

test, you will be given a sedative and an analgesic. A local anesthetic will

be sprayed into your mouth to suppress the need to cough or gag when the

endoscope is inserted. A mouth guard will be inserted to protect your teeth

and the endoscope. Dentures must be removed. After the gag reflex has been

suppressed by the anesthetic, the endoscope will be advanced through the

esophagus to the stomach and duodenum. Air will be introduced through the

endoscope to enhance viewing. The lining of these organs is examined and

biopsies can be obtained through the endoscope. Biopsies are tissue samples

that are reviewed under the microscope.

When the area has been viewed and any biopsies taken (if necessary), the

endoscope will be removed and you will be asked to cough to expel the extra

air. Food and liquids are restricted until your cough reflex returns.

The test lasts about 30 to 60 minutes.

I have had this test many times and do not find it difficult. The local

anesthetic makes swallowing difficult. This wears off shortly after the

procedure. The endoscope may stimulate some gagging in the back of the

throat. There may be a sensation of gas and the movement of the scope can be

felt in the abdomen. Biopsies cannot be felt.

So the test is not too different in terms of mechanics from the colonoscopy

and is even better, because you have to fast for it after midnight on the

day of the test rather then drink a gallon of Go-Lytely!

I am sure that you and your doctor will get to the bottom of this with these

tests!
