Are there any ways one can check their abdomin for uterine fibroids?

I am curious because my mother had a fibroid grow to the size of a

grapefruit before she went to a gynecologist. At the size of a

grapefruit you could actually feel it in her abdomin and that is when

she went for help. Do they have to get this big before a person would

notice them? Throughout this month of December I have had bloating

and cramping all month I know I have gained 4lbs over the holidays

and have been drinking to much diet pop this month so I have tried

dieting and limiting my consumption of pop two weeks now , but still

experience much bloating plus I started my period yesterday which has

made the situation worse. Could these be symptoms of a uterine

fibroid? I am 38 and have an appointment with my MD in Feb. and my

Gynecologist in March so if this continues I will be consulting

them. Just would like some opinions from people who have experienced

uterine fibroids.

Hi anne

Other main symptoms are heavy periods often with

clots. My fibroid was the size of an apple at the time

of the initial laporoscopy investigation, but they

decided not to remove it at this time. I was diagnosed

with IBS- irritable bowel syndrome too. Meanwhile my

fibroid has now grown to the size of a grapefruit and

I look bloated and get pains usually at night, every

night, but I can't feel the fibroid, although the

gyneocologist can- so now I'm due for a myo in early

Feb. I'm wondering if you could also be diagnosed with

IBS as your symptoms sound very similar to mine.
