Hi, - I think only a fool would try to explain the rhyme or reason behind some of the LID recommendations, so I'll give it a shot :-) > All unsalted nuts (except almonds) No idea about this, except for peanuts which are goitrogenic (meaning they block uptake of iodine). OTOH, a lot of us consider peanut butter to be an LID staple, and still have excellent RAI uptake. > Prunes No idea. I've heard of other versions that specifically disallow peaches and pears (goitrogens). > *Enriched* rice Two possibilities: Rice is banned on some LID's; some other ban only American grown rice, on the theory that our soil is much higher in iodine than Indian soil, where much rice is also grown. I suspect in this case, they are forbidding anything that has been enriched, in the theory that it may be enriched with iodine, but I doubt that's the case. > Dried fruits (except raisins) No idea. I've heard of some versions that that ban raisins (but not grapes). > Granulated sugar ? wasn't this one from Sara Rosenthal's book? Yikes! Reopening the LID can of worms, huh? There is no reason for granulated white sugar to be banned from a low iodine diet (unless you also happen to be diabetic). > Beer I've heard this, too, but don't know why it would be a problem. Perhaps the getting this information from some older lists that disallowed canned foods, and they don't realize that beer also comes in bottles. Or maybe they're worried that you'll drink too much. I'd love to hear their explanations, although I'd bet no one there knows; LID's have a tendency to originate in mysterious places. Whenever I've asked questions about specifics on an LID I was given, I was always answered with shrugged shoulders. NYC
