Guest guest
Dear Group, My wife and I just found out that our baby boy due Sep 4 has bilateral club feet that are " moderate to severe " in nature. Can anyone help us with some questions, we have done some research and believe that we would like to use the Ponseti method and would like to know where the best place is, besides Iowa to get the best treatment. We are located in Phx AZ. Also would like to know the advantages with this method vs. surgery? Can this method be used on Severe cases? and many more questions....Just would like to talk to someone who has gone through what we are heading towards. thank you very much, and
Guest guest
I don't write much just mostly read and take it all in, but you came to the right place for answers. I am from Minnesota so I cant help with a doctor in your area all I can say is from my experience- be as proactive as possible. Speak you mind and question things as they come up. I did question and confront our doctor on numerous occasions and looking back now I should have done it even more. I have a 22 month old girl with severe bilateral clubfoot. The Ponseti method in theory should take 5-9 serial castings (not as bad as you think) to attain the correct position. Our daughter had 14 castings in addition to the tentonmy you hear about (also not as bad as you think) which has a three week casting. She was five months old before getting out of casts- which was too long, but just trusted the doctor. To make a long story short she was still not corrected 100% causing a delay in walking until yesterday (in addition to being stubbon) but we are going to Iowa to see Dr. Ponseti the end of the month to have him put her in a few more casting to achieve 100% correction. Settle for no less. You may have a few problems with the bar and shoes, but practice makes perfect. We had a problem that we were told that she had enough room to keep wearing the same shoes, but she was developing sores (this is after a year of wearing the same ones) so they added padding and made them smaller for her. I finally demanded a new pair of shoes and it turned out that they missed an entire shoe size. Her new shoes are great with no problems. You know they don't know any different and as others have said it becomes as natural as putting on pajamas. Just do your homework, stick to your guns, and keep the shoes on! Good luck, Mom of Grace > Dear Group, > My wife and I just found out that our baby boy due Sep 4 has > bilateral club feet that are " moderate to severe " in nature. > Can anyone help us with some questions, we have done some research > and believe that we would like to use the Ponseti method and would > like to know where the best place is, besides Iowa to get the best > treatment. Guest guest
Mom of Amazing Walking Grace, Congratulations on Grace taking steps, how exciting. Thank you for your advice, this is all alot to take in but we are doing ok. The support and information available on this board has made this much easier. I am sure we all went through the same shock, and this is making it much easier for us. So many great stories, along with trials and tribulations. I believe Zach will do just fine. I will keep checking in and let everyone know how we come along. It is a ways off but we are trying to make plans asap so we can get the ball rolling. Thank you again. and > > Dear Group, > > My wife and I just found out that our baby boy due Sep 4 has > > bilateral club feet that are " moderate to severe " in nature. > > Can anyone help us with some questions, we have done some research > > and believe that we would like to use the Ponseti method and would > > like to know where the best place is, besides Iowa to get the best > > treatment. Guest guest
Dear and - Welcome - I feel you - I found out the same about my son roughly 2 months ago. You will find a lot of help and support here. referred me to some doctors in the Phoenix area and other members in Arizona have written to me as well. I want to thank all of you so much for your kind words and information - this site has really helped me manage my fears and expectations. I have contacted Dr. Hrasky ( his phone # is in an earlier post from to me) who was recommended to me by another member. He is very nice and helpful - unfortunately not on my insurance. I am having another level 2 ultrasound on Monday and have an informational appointment with an Orthopedist by the name of Louis Vu on Wednesday. Dr. Vu works out of the same office as Dr. L. Shindell. Dr Shindell is not only a member of the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America but was also referred to me by several colleagues of my step-father, who has been a pediatrician in the Valley for 40 years. After my appointment next week, I'll post and let you know how it went. The shock is terrible - but managable. I wish you both the best. please feel free to contact me personally. & Mohamad
