Hi, Cherie.

I don't remember if you've already visited this school, but I echo the other

posts suggesting a visit. We went to visit an oral school here, just to see what

they did and compare it to the district's program for spec ed. I also wanted to

get an idea of what I should be doing at home, and they were very helpful.

Emmett would not qualify to go to that school on the district's tab, so we would

have to pay for it ourselves. BUT, even if he did qualify, we would have to

think very seriously about sending him. For two reasons: he's already completely

oral and verbal (he only started losing hearing last year), and the long day. It

was a full-court press pretty much all day. The K class did half day at the oral

school and half day mainstreamed. Their day was from 8 to 4 (travel time

included), the thought of it exhausted even me!

I am also a stay-at-home and felt that the long day would be too much for

Emmett. My 6-year-old is in a private school and does an 8 to 1 day (grades K-6

in the same classroom, all doing the same school day) and we really like that.

Neither one of our children went or go to preschool. Our philosophy is that once

you start going to school, you don't stop until you retire!

Each family is different and we don't think poorly of families that make a

choice that's different from ours, so I'm not spouting off our belief in the

hopes you'll follow. I really believe each family knows what's best for them.

You'll know what's best for your daughter.

<<What are your opinions for how long a child age 3, 4, and 5 should be

in school each day? Is an all day program too long for a 3yo but not

for a 4 or 5yo? I know kids attend daycare all day but my kids don't.

I'm a stay-home mom so the thought of sending my almost-4yo daughter to

a full-day oral preschool sounds a bit long right now. Maybe she could

handle it better next fall, when she's 4.5yo?>>

Let's see, when Neal was 3, he went from 9:00 to 11:30; at 4, he went from 9:00

to 1:00; and at 5, he went from 9:00 to 2:15. All that time he also had a one

hour drive each way. The full day until 2:15 was hard for him. Maybe if not for

the drive it would have been fine though. There were two four years olds in his

class who lived closer and seemed to have an easier time of it than Neal. Now

that he's in Kindergarten, he just goes from 8:15 to 11:40 and it's in our same

city. Makes it seem like a breeze! So as far as your question goes. I think

it's totally up to the child if they can handle it. And also might depend on

how long the full day is and how far away it is.

Cherie,

I think this really depends on the child. started school at 3.2 years.

She went for half a day for 5 days a week. If she had been offered full day,

she would have done well with it. She loved being at school and no longer

needed a nap at this age. However with my son, he isn't ready for anything more

than the half day. He still takes a nap (or heaven help us around 5pm).

adjusts to different situations with ease, ...not so much. Niether of

my children have been in day care, as I'm an almost stay at home mom (working

two days while daddy watches them). Just like the different communication

modes, you need to see what would work best for you daughter. Maybe you could

try it a few days a week to see how she does. Maybe they can allow her to just

come for half a day. Or maybe you could do full days for just 2 or 3 days

during the week.

Let us know how it goes.
