Guest guest
Hi Sara, I had a baby and was diagnosed w/ post partum Graves. ' You can get pptd (post partum thyroid) three-12 months after childbirth. A hypo phase starts after the hyper phase. Can last for awhile. It looks like your are already starting to return to normal. Your TSH is dropping and your FT4 is coming up. This is a good thing. There are antibodies associated w/ Hashi(hypo) and Graves'(hyper) that's how they dx them. Endos don't usually give meds (maybe beta blockers for hyper phase) for pptd. Just to let you know, some women may stay hypo after pptd.(small percentage) It looks like your going in the right direction. What is causing your father's hypo? I hope this helps .Sara wrote: I posted on this board about 2 months ago, and now I am back because I need advice from people who actually know what they are talking about. In my original post, I was going through a phase of hyperthyroidism - constantly sweating and hot, anxiety, insomnia, irritable – however, no weight loss, of course. I had seen my general practitioner and he had done a round of blood work and diagnosed me as hyper and referred me to an edno. The results were: TSH reflex <.01 range: .35 - 5.5 T3 - 204.4 range: 60 - 181 T4 - 9 range: 4.5 - 10.9 TSH <.01 range: .35 - 5.5 Thyroglobulin AB - 113 range: 0 - 19 I made an appointment with a "reputable endocrinologist" and had to wait 4 months to see him. The week before the appointment, I began to feel very lethargic, my irritability decreased as did my appetite, and my hair loss started to slow down. I went in for my appt. and he told me most likely I had post partum thyroiditis but was concerned because my dad had been recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism. He did another round of blood work and told me to come back in 6 weeks. The results of those labs were: TSH - 17.45 Free T4 - 0.7 I just went in last week for another round of labs. I am now obviously hypo, based on the last labs, sorry I don't have the ranges – that is the only information they gave me. I have been feeling awful. My migraines are terrible, very low energy, bad heartburn, numbness in my feet. During my appt, I ask him what the time frame is for when I will start feeling better or if there is anything he can give me, and his response was that we would just have to wait and see (come back in 6 weeks and let's re-test). I can understand his position, but I am now 8 months post partum, and I am sick of feeling bad. I have two kids to take care of (3 if you count my husband) and I never know each day how I am going to feel. I just got my latest labs in the mail and here they are, with no explanation or note: TSH – 7.00 Free T4 – 0.8 I know you have all been through a lot and are very knowledgeable, so can someone please give me some advice. I truly appreciate any help or guidance you can offer. I am so frustrated and tired of feeling bad. Thanks, Sara Yahoo! Messenger with Voice. Guest guest
My concern would be that your antibodies (the Thyroglobulin AB test from the first set of labs) show antibodies. Aren't antibodies only present in hashi's or graves? But looking at the most recent lab, I agree with , it does look like your body is trying to return to normal, since your numbers went hyper then hypo but are now coming back down from hypo. I agree with the doc's wait and see approach right now, because your body might in fact return to normal, but if you end up hyper again at any point, that screams hashi's swing (hashi's people swing back and forth between hyper and hypo). Keep us informed, and in the meantime, sit your husband down and talk to him. Tell him how this is making you feel. Tell him you feel like you're treading water in an ocean with big waves and you need him to help keep you afloat (help with housework, help with the kids, after all, it takes two to make a kid, it's that way for a reason LOL). *hugs* and I hope you feel much better very soon. I can't imagine going through this with a newborn and kids. Re: Post Partum Thyroiditis - advice please! Hi Sara, I had a baby and was diagnosed w/ post partum Graves. Guest guest
Hi Sara, me again, is right, antithyroglobulin autoantbodies and thyroid peroxidase autoantibodies confirms autoimmune thyroid disease. The peroxidase is usually done because thyroglobulin AB might not be picked up. However in your case, thyroglobulin AB is high. Another test, thyroid stimulating immunoglobulin(TSI) is high in Graves'. A person can shift from Hashi and Graves'. You didn't have a TSI completed from what I see. Hashi may go back and forth(hypo, hyper). Then again you may just settle in normal range. Maybe you should ask your endo to do a TSI. Sometimes treatment isn't given because the swings(hyper/hypo) don't last long. Eventually you may end up being hypo. This is hard for me to understand, because it's hell on the person going through it. I can sympathize with you. I have a nine month old, and I went from hyper to hypo from too much medication. Try to be positive, this may pass and you could end up back to normal. Unfortunately it is a waiting game for now. Guest guest
Thanks for all the responses. I don't know what is causing my dad's hypo. He is not seeing an endocrinologist, just his family doctor. He is on synthroid and has been responding very well to it. I guess I will just wait and see what happens at my next appt which is on Oct. 10th. I have become less lethargic, but just want to feel NORMAL again. I also just don't want to keep enduring the PLIGHT OF THE FAT GIRL!!!! I constantly work out and have been doing weight watchers and still weigh around 175 (I am 5 feet 9 inches). Ugh, it is so frustrating. Anyway, I will keep you posted - thanks for the support - it means a lot. : ) Sara > >Reply-To: The_Thyroid_Support_Group >To: <The_Thyroid_Support_Group > >Subject: Re: Post Partum Thyroiditis - advice >please! >Date: Sun, 3 Sep 2006 10:45:25 +0900 > >My concern would be that your antibodies (the Thyroglobulin AB test from >the first set of labs) show antibodies.
