I have thought about going to see if I can sign Tyler up for SSI.

We have insurance but found out recently that the company my hubby

works for switched insurances on us and they will not pay for any

kind of orthopedic devices. His doc is also not on the ppo list so

they are not paying as much for his visits as they was. I thought

that if I could get him on SSI then he would automatically qualify

for medicaid reguardless of our income and that would help out a

bunch!

How do we sign up for SSI?

We were going to sign Kai >>up, but my husband's income was such that

some months he would qualify for a small amount >>and others he would

not qualify at all. The biggest bennefit of SSI is the medical aid. If

you >>are on SSI your medical treatment is paid for by the state

(medical coupon). That can be a >>huge thing for ongoing things like

clubfoot where you will be seeing the doctor every so often >>for

several years. My biggest bitch was that they do NOT consider the

medical costs. Yes, >>my husband makes around $40,000 a year, but our

medical costs are great between the ortho, >>the speech therapist, the

allergist, and the normal appointments. I am just grateful that Kai

Call your local SSI office to get an appointment to pick up/do the papaerwork.

Very easy, but after you get the paperwork you will have to get alot of stuff

from various people and places if I remember right.

I know what you mean about the medical bills. Just for Tyler's

doctor alone it was 48,000. I think each state might have different

guidelines too, not sure. Have not really looked into the ssi just

asked around about it to some people that I know get it. Think that

hubby would prob make too much but I am like you the medical aid

would be a great help. As for the PT, I found a program here that

pays for Tyler's PT and they are income based, and we actually

didn't make too much. She comes to the house once a week. You

might check online to see if they have any programs like this in

your area. Plus when Tyler turns 4 they are going to put him in pre-

school at no cost to us. We have a project coordinator, she looks

for any programs that Tyler may be eligible for and helps us sign

him up for them. They sent a speech therepist out to evaluate him

she said that there was a slight delay but she recommended that we

work on his feet first and if he has not improved in a couple months

that they would reevaluate him and possibly start speech therepy on

him, they would also come to the house to do this as well. The way

that I found this program was I got online and looked up help for

cripled children in my area.

Yeah, Kai get speech therapy thru them - Early Intervention - and as long as he

still needs it, he will go to preschool when he is 3. It isnt free, but I think

they just charge our insurance and that is it, there doesnt seem to be any cost

to us. Our Family Coordinator thru them is who got the $200 reimbursement for

our plane tickets to IC for us. Honestly we have great insurance and I bet the

insurance company hates us - 2 kids with speech therapy, 2 high risk pregnancies

with multiple meds and multiple ultrasounds, 2 kids with allergies (allergy

testing and treatment is very expensive) not to mention the ambulance for when

Kai had anaphylaxis, several ER trips, and all the clubfoot treatment. Alot of

these bills we only see the co-pay of, I cant really imagine what the full on

cost is!

I was told my son would NOT qualify for SSI because the disability is

correctable and was corrected - it's not a life long nor really life altering

disabilty.

Does anyone get SSI benefits for their children

with clubbed feet?

Hi there, My sister in law was telling me I should try to sign up

Isabella for SSI that she may qualify. I honestly don't know anything

about this. She said it don't go by income. I was wondering if anyone

has this for their child? I told her that I don't think she is

disabled and that they probably wouldn't either. I just am interested

in knowing more about this.

Thanks for any info
