This is ridiculous. There are many, many children that have been helped

immensely by ABA and similar programs, mine being one of them. Just because

it hasn't worked well for your child doesn't mean it is a cult. Perhaps

your provider doesn't know what they are doing.

I AGREE COMPLETELY!!! MY SON HAS BEEN HELPED TREMENDOUSLY BY ABA/VB. iT

SOUNDS LIKE THEY ARE DOING SOMETHING WRONG. I ALSO FEEL THAT IT IS IMPORTANT FOR

A

PARENT TO LEARN ABA/VB. YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD BEST AND MAY BE ABLE TO FIGURE OUT

WHAT THE SCHOOL IS DOING WRONG.

Dear eclr,

Our son has been helped tremendously by ABA. We rank it in the top 3 things that

have helped him. (Treating metals and Occupational Therapy are probably 1 and

2). He has gone from functionally non-verbal to reveal a highly intelligent,

funny kid with a conscience (unlike the signs below). His vocabulary is

increasing, not decreasing, and one of his favorite things to do is write

stories. He is in a regular first grade class with an aide (don't know if he'll

be in a regular class next year...abstractions are still hard because of the

autism, not the ABA).

However, there seem to be many different approaches, philosophies, and types of

companies/schools doing ABA. Not all are knowledgeable. Not all of the

knowledgeable ones are ethical. Not all of the knowledgeable and ethical ones

have good business practices, enough trained people, people trained enough.

Schools tend to be more generalists than tailored to the individual child, from

what I have seen.

If my child isn't responding to ANY therapy after two months (he takes about 6

weeks to adjust to something new), my husband and I have a powow and try our

best to figure out why. We learned this when was in floortime: the

philosophy was to follow the child's lead, but had no lead to follow.

We started ABA and he learned to focus and attend. Then he was able to get

something out of floortime.

Autism has been like an onion. We keep asking " why isn't he all better yet? "

and there always seems to be another layer...For us, the layers were OT, ABA,

GFCF, Floortime, addressing gut issues, finding high copper and treating it,

parasites, yeast, other metals....and he continues to get better...but not " all

better " ....yet.

After 5 years of this, we are so tired...I don't think we could have kept it up

if we didn't have the Internet and Pfeiffer...people to bounce ideas off

of...to help us with direction...to help us pick our battles.

Don't give up! Don't let yourself get in a rut! Find people who can help you

figure it out. Maybe YOUR son needs something before he can benefit from

ABA...Or.....Maybe they're not doing ABA.

I hope you figure out what your son needs...

, mom to (7, autistic) and (8, heavy metals and mysterious

issues)

d.. Reduced capacity to form flexible and intimate relationships.

e.. Poor judgement.
