Guest guest
Hi Walt. I am really surprised your doctor prescribed Allopurinol during a gout attack. It does not help then. However if you take it when you are not having an attack, it will not come back. I have been on it for 7 years. Prior to this I had 2 or 3 attacks a year. Since I have been on Allopurinol I have not had a single attack. Funnily enough I had gout way before I ever had a kidney problem. I was only diagnosed with IGAN just over a year ago at 30% function, but have had gout for 10 years+ W In a message dated 4/11/2005 10:04:16 PM Eastern Standard Time, wcrosby@... writes: Gout is part of kidney disease by the looks of things. I've had colchicine for treating it after I've gotten it, and that works after about 4 days -- which is the maximum that you can take it. I've also been prescribed allipurinol to take as an effective preventative, but I stopped taking it, because it seemed to prolong an attack I was already having. I'm going to try and go back on it now that I'm no longer in an active gout period... Walt _____ From: llinst Sent: Monday, April 11, 2005 11:20 AM To: iga-nephropathy Subject: Gout Hi. Guest guest
No -- actually, he told me that it would make an attack worse if I took it while I was having an attack. However, right after I was prescribed it, and started taking it, I got another attack within about 2 days. I stopped the allipurinol, and I had a couple of attacks -- first in the right hand for about a week, then the left hand for a couple of weeks. I finally cleared all cases about 3 weeks ago, and I'm going to start it again. _____ From: peterwhitaker@... Sent: Tuesday, April 12, 2005 8:43 AM To: iga-nephropathy Subject: Re: Gout - Hi Walt. Guest guest
Most people who get gout already have the tendency to get it - it's not just uric acid, but the tendency for it to form crystals. For some, the extra uric acid from chronic renal insufficiency might contribute to it, or maybe just put them over the edge toward having symptoms of gout. Whatever the reason, most people who have kidney failure still don't get gout, despite the lower kidney function. That's the way I understand it. Guest guest
I got this gout prior to Igan (approx.10yrs later) I was also prescribed Alluprinol but after it was confirmed Igan the Neph told me to refrain Alluprinol as it interfered with Warfarin. Now the gout attack happens twice yearly for my case.Warfarin combined with Dipradimole according to study in S'pore General Hosp can slow down the progress of Igan significantly.
