Laws re: amount of time on van going to school

Does anyone know if there's a law as to how much time a 4-year old can be on

a van coming and going from school? Our is starting a new

out-of-town school next week and I'm real concerned to how long he's going

to be traveling on the van. The schools about 40 mins. away without traffic

and an hour away with traffic. He's carpooling with another child which

adds extra time to getting him to school. He might be on the van for over

an hour before all is said and done.

Anyway, if you could shed some light on this topic, I'd appreciate it.

Cheryl,

I do not think there is a law regarding the amount of time a young

child can be on a bus, but I'll bet you could get Dr. H. involved

and have her say that it is not in 's medical/health interest

to be on there for so long. I overheard her talking to someone

about 's bus issues (She may have been talking to Steve) and

she was pretty adamant that he not be on the bus for such a long

time. If you are concerned, as you well should be, you should

discuss this with Dr. H. and see if she can help out. An hour-long

commute each way for any child is too long. That's two hours out of

his day that are spent on a bus! And what about his feeding

issues/pump? And if the weather is bad, it may take longer. Is

there no other place for him that is closer to home? I would not

take this lightly, but you may have to make a really big deal out of

it.

Remember, the school district will do what is easiest and cheapest

for them, not necessarily in the best interest of the child.

Jodi,

I knew the story you were describing sounded familiar! You're right

on, that Dr. H. conversation was, indeed, with me. And she did

follow up, apparently, unless the fact that he went from being the

last dropoff to the first a couple of days later was an incredible

coincidence.

For as difficult as she can be at times, she's worth her weight in

gold when it comes to one of " her kids " needing something. Cheryl,

it's definitely worth asking her. When I told her 's ride home

was taking over an hour and the school's only 20 minutes away, she

went ballistic on her own and did the rest.

Best of luck.

Thanks Jodi.

It's good timing that we'll be seeing Dr. H on Thurs. I definately plan on

getting a medical letter from her stating reasons why he can't be on the bus

that long. I'm placing a call to the bus company Monday and see where that

gets me. I plan on being a " squeaky wheel " on this one cause he just can't

be on the van any longer than need be.

Unfortunately, for us at this time needs to attend this school for

the sign language. He's doing so well with that and not so well with

auditory alone. We are planning on reimplanting him with a new Cochlear

Implant to see if we can get more sound into him. Right now he's just not

hearing, so signing is becoming is dominant language.

Thanks for your input. We'll keep you posted.
