Guest guest
We do this in a normal speaking voice (ah, ee, oo, mm, ss, sh), covering our mouth, and have the child repeat the sound. When Hadley was younger, we taught her the six sounds by having different props that represented each sound (airplane, bee, owl, top, snake, fish) and had her drop the corresponding prop into a bucket. We started by sitting next to her, then once she got the hang of it, progressed to doing it from three feet away, six, etc. (not in one sitting, this was done gradually as she became familiar with the game). I should say that we started this when Hadley was six months old, so you would adapt the activity for an older child. Now that she is 4 1/2, she only does the Ling sounds during her A-V sessions and it is usually done while she is busy with another activity (so there is no need to cover your mouth, as her visual attention is elsewhere). If an older child needs to unlearn a reliance on lipreading, the person doing the exercise should be the person responsible for covering the mouth, not having the child face a wall (makes it seem punitive), But, you can have fun with it with using a blindfold and making it into different games (or having your older daughter say them, if her articulation is clear enough). We often changed the activity a bit to make it different and not a chore. Kerry Question RE: 5 (now 6) Ling Sound test In the book " Not Deaf Enough " PAM says to use the 5 Ling Sound test each morning (now the 6 Ling test- haven't gotten that far yet in the book but I think a 6th sound was added). She said to do it at 20 feet, and if sounds are not heard at 20 then move to 10 feet away. Do you do this at a normal speaking voice or a whisper? And do you have the child say face the wall so they can't speechread you???? I do have those porcupine animals I could have Bree drop in a bucket when she hears the sound, but I'm not sure how to 'condition' her in the beginning. -Robin Mommy to Constance 6, Breanna 2 (?mild HL under investigation, toe walking, food allergies), is 23mo (saying only approx 15 words) Memphis TN
