Guest guest
I was recently told that when it comes time to have my excess skin removed to check with the local burn center. They have been known to do the surgery for free in return for the donation of the skin. Has anyone done this or heard about this as a possiblity? Guest guest
This is one of those urban legends that seems to get dredged up every time someone new looks into PS. lol. It's not true. Our skin is in bad shape and is of no use to anyone, plus it's my understanding that they use cadaver skin or grow new skin for burn victims from their own skin. So unfortunately, no free ride in the name of charity. Work on documenting rashes, back pain, etc. with your doctor and try to get it covered by insurance. If all else fails, go to Costa Rica! ------------------------------------------------ Terry Mayers 5DollarHosting.comR http://www.5dollarhosting.com (877)-838-HOST / .... because it shouldn't cost a fortune to make a fortune! Guest guest
all skin that is used on a burn patient that is not his or her own, can only be left on for a few days. Their bodies reject it, just like an organ that has been transplanted. If you have a question about donating skin, contact a local burn center, they can tell you for sure........ Guest guest
Boliver - I'm sorry to say but I think I heard this story was a hoax. As far as I know, skin has to be removed from the burn patient themselves for grafts. They cannot use someone else's skin. Jeanne in WI Age 39 - Dr. T. Guest guest
There's a costaricaplasticsurgery group at yahoogroups.com - you can check it out. (you need to do a search on the whole name, costaricaplasticsurgery) Not overly active, but when someone goes down, they tend to post on it about their experiences. I'm a member - figured I'd have to do something like that since my GBS was self-pay, I could pretty well guarantee my PS would be self-pay. Guest guest
Well, it's a country in Central America ... Oh, you probably mean about PS. lol. A lot of people seem to be going over there for plastic surgery that they can't get covered here. The Rosenstock-Leiberman clinic there apparently has a great reputation and does wonderful work. ------------------------------------------------ Terry Mayers 5DollarHosting.comR http://www.5dollarhosting.com (877)-838-HOST / .... because it shouldn't cost a fortune to make a fortune! Guest guest
Uh Jeanne yes they can use other's skin. They even use porcine skin (or pig skin). Someone who's over 90 % burned doesn't have that much viable skin to skin graft. And children also don't readily have enough skin at times to graft. If they will take non-cadaver doner skin I have no clue. But, it doesn't hurt to ask. The place maynot pay for it to be removed, but take the skin as a good will gesture. Testing is performed. The only way to know for sure is to call a burn center and ask. Debbie Sellman R.N. Guest guest
It's a myth that circulates. Our skin is not useful to them. Sad, huh? If it was, there'd never be another need, ever.
