Guest guest
Hi Suzee, Welcome to this group! Before I talk thyroid, I do believe that when giving phone numbers out, it is much better to be safe than sorry and should only be done in private e-mail. All of our private e-mails can be found that top of each e-mail that comes into your e-mail box, if you are getting them in e-mail. Maybe Jean could at least pull your post from the archives there so the number isn't left in the group. Please, Suzee, don't panic! First off, I hope you will not rush into ANY permanent treatment for your disease until you become euthyroid on the atd's FIRST! Your sick, and your not thinking clearly, because that is part of this disease also. You also want the *quick* fix and there is none, all of it takes time, no matter which option you choose. I want you to go to the home page of this group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/graves_support/ on the menu on the left page go to the Files section...please read the 20 reasons why NOT to do RAI, also read the Contract for a Push Doc...which NO doctor in their right minds will every sign because they can't promise us these things will not happen. I wrote that contract for people who have already decided to NOT do RAI but the docs keep pushing it...a way to get them off their backs. EVERY problem I list in that comes from *my* personal experiences since having RAI in 1996. Once you choose a permanent treatment, you can NOT undo it. Your thyroid is NOT what is sick, it is your immune system that is out of whack and has decided your thyroid doesn't belong in your body so it sends antibodies to attack your thyroid. Your thyroid fights back the only way it knows how, making lots and lots of hormone and that is what is making you hyper right now. Hyper is the PITS, but hypO is pure HELL. RAI does not, in any way shape or form address the autoimmune nature of our disease...only the taking of atd's will lower these antibodies. Once you become euthyroid or even as your levels begin to come down and your atd's lowered, you will begin to feel much better and this panic and anxiety will go away. Becoming as educated as possible in this disease, taking the time to learn the pro's and con's of all treatment options and becoming proactive in your treatment of choice...that YOU choose, not your doctors, not your spouse, not your neighbor and not me...YOU choose is a must for each and everyone of us. Remission is only possible in using the atds' surgery and RAI will lead to permanent hypO thyroid...not fun, I promise you that! Go to the link I put above, read all you can in the File section, print it out, show it to your doctors if you want to...order a couple of books, Graves Disease; A Practical Guide by Elaine and The Thyroid Solution by Dr. Ridha Arem . Please Suzee, take your time in deciding a permanent treatment, in the mean time, get on a beta blocker and one of the atd's and become euthyroid. Not one single person who is hyper can think with clarity and make an *INFORMED* permanent treatment decision. It should be against medical ethics for ANY doctor to push a permanent treatment when we are hyper, unless cancer is involved. Take care, keep reading, read the books, read the archives, keep asking questions and breath, nice slow deep breathing, several times a day will really help you more than you can know right now. And above all else take your time before going for the permanent treatments. Jody PS All that itching is common with graves disease, but when your levels become euthyroid or even start lowering, this WILL go away. _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com

Rather then delete the posts (there was the original and a reply showing the phone number), I'll forward them back to the group and edit them. Pity Yahoo won't let them be edited after they hit the archives. For everyone, Jody is correct, even tho are our archives are private, sending phone numbers isn't a good idea. While I believe everyone who is a member of the list are good folk, you never know. Jean C List Mom :-)
Guest guest
Hi Suzee, That little episode is called panic, and it is one of the symptoms of graves. YOU did nothing wrong, and it is so much better to share those 'spells' in this group with people who understand and know what you are going through. You, and all the new people have just been diagnosed with a chronic disease, that alone is enough to cause a whirlwind of emotions. And reading, no matter where you are reading from, well it can get scary. I am one of those people who is vehemently opposed to RAI, I always will be, and I always will be outspoken against it. More so when newly diagnosed people are pushed, bullied or lied to, to get them into this treatment that is 'easier' for the doctors, not for us. Trust me, they don't live in a hypO body for the rest of our lives, we do, so we need to read, educate and understand before we chose any permanent treatment. Only you can make the final decision, but if you make it for RAI and you have done so when you are euthyroid and go in with your eyes wide open, then that is your choice and I really do wish you well and hope you are one of the lucky ones. Many people do well for the first year or two after RAI, just not being hyper feels so good! It is when you get to the 5-10 year marks and things are not so great anymore, and your doctor is telling you 'that's not thyroid related' or 'that's all in your head - here take a prozac' when it IS thyroid related, things aren't so easy anymore. FYI for you and all the newly diagnosed, our symptoms list in the Files section of this group is what I call the Extended Symptoms List. Terry ding, one of the 'old-timers' here too worked really hard to organize this list, and pushed for quite a while to get us all to contribute to that list...not everyone gets every symptoms, but they are all common among us at some point in this journey to be considered valid symptoms. Unfortunately, doctors us a 'short' list, very short in my opinion and comes from 30-50 year old medical books, for now, thing regarding our symptoms seems to change. One more FYI for you...my endo, my 3rd one now, does not do RAI anymore except in cases of thyroid cancer or when people can not take one of the atd's and they have a heart problem that prevents them from having surgery. Though it is too late for me to not have RAI, she earned my undying respect for her stance against this archaic and barbaric treatment. She has not been doing it for the last 7/8 years now. I am lucky, she is one of the smart, caring and updated endo's out there and she can not die or retire before I leave this earth ;-) Just take your time, and I was so very serious about doing the deep breathing, it will help you a lot to remain calm. The panic attacks will lessen as you begin your treatment and become euthyroid again... so when they do, just let loose in this group...this goes for every new person in here. Be kind to yourself, gentle, try to remember that most of what your doing is your thyroid talking, not you...you have made a HUGE jump in the right direction by starting your education NOW before any permanent treatment was made, so be very proud of yourself for this too. I know it isn't easy to even begin to think along these lines when we are sick. And is right, all the treatment options have pro's and con's, we need to understand the pro's and con's of them all before making a permanent choice...but we also MUST have treatment at the same time. The atd's will buy you time to come to the choice that will suit you best. There are many who have been doing ATD's for years in this group, so that is always a possibility too...why not consider a small dose of this for the rest of your life if needed, at least your thyroid is making your own hormone and your not trying to take that one pill a day that is lacking in so much of what our bodies make. Again, take your time, then YOU make the decision for what treatment is best for YOU. *HUGZ* Jody _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com

Thanks!! I need all of the support I can get! YES, OUCHIE!!!!! I canNOT believe the pain this butt is causing me. Let me tell you something....I know alot of people have hit, bumped or fallen on their tailbones......but if you didn't break or fracture or shatter anything....you haven't a clue. I'll tell you how I know....not cuz of my own pain but because.... The On-Call Doctor that I went to does not believe in pain medication. He likes to tell you to take Ibuprofen and come back in two weeks. Well, he prescribed to me: OXYCONTIN: 20 mg...twice Daily PERCOSET: 1-2 every 4-6 hours Teradol: 1, four times daily And, two meds to help me go pottie since those muscles aren't wanting to work very hard! Now THAT is some serious pain!! I can't believe that I can stand it! Especially at night.....the pain is un-bearable!! Totally 100% can't stand it!! Can't sleep at all!!!! Take care....thanks for the thoughts! **Shattered Butt Suzee**
Guest guest
Suzee - Be careful with the oxycontin - it can be very addicting. I've read several articles lately where people weren't told this by their doctors and became addicted to it and/or suffered withdrawl symptoms after the prescription ran out. For not believing in pain meds, that doctor sure gave you some potent ones. Just wanted to make sure you knew that. Guest guest
> > I definitely agree with in that Oxycontin is very addicting. Ohhh....nobody has to worry about me getting addicted to any narcotics. When I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia...the pain Doc that I saw, had me on: OXYCONTIN (For pain)- LONG ACTING PERCOSET (For pain)- QUICK ACTING VALIUM (For Stress & Nerves)-LONG ACTING XANAX (For Stesss & Nerves- QUICK ACTING) ZANAFLEX (Muscle Relaxer)- VERY STRONG ??????? (For Sleep) CAN'T REMEMBER THE NAME OF IT. Anyhow, my point is.......I TOOK MYSELF OFF OF ALL OF THESE MEDS, Except for the Valium. I still need that and that's prolly cus of the HypER stages! I dunno! Nobody worry about me getting addicted to any of the meds I'm on now. I've been there, done that and don't take enough to get addicted anyhow! Besides, they gave me these meds, because he knew I took myself off of them on my own once and don't abuse meds like some people do. Plus, I can handle them...it's already been proven once! Thanks for caring, but no need to worry!! **Suzee Shattered Butt**
