Guest guest
Found this in our archives: message #26400 Re: a humble moment and envelope glue Kupper, the Executive Director of GIG, spoke here in Utah a few weeks ago, and she said it is now safe to lick envelopes. She said envelope glue no longer contains wheat, as it used to. ----- Also #21062 RE: Odd things to avoid Wheat starch is used on various papers (both as a binder and as a finish). I suggest you avoid eating it (and that is more likely the reason people react to licking stamps and envelopes, as the company that makes pretty much all the adhesive for this in the US says that corn starch is in the glue, not wheat. Both US and EU web sites promoting uses for starch (these are sites for those with monster farms and those who buy starches) promote wheat starch for it's nice finish and compatibility with inkjet and laser toners. ----- From the St. Listserv archives 2005, number 361 The following response from the " Envelope Manufacturers Association " indicates that envelope glue made by National Starch, a major domestic supplier, are corn-based and gluten-free but the industry suggests not licking envelopes in any event. The .pdf file mentioned in the note can be found at: www.rochesterceliacs.org/temp/envelopeglue.pdf Jxx *************************************************** Dear Mr. xxx, Since Maynard is on vacation, he has asked me to respond to your e-mail regarding gluten in envelope glue. I contacted National Starch and Chemical Co. and the attached pdf file was forwarded to me to pass along to you. I was told that to the best of their knowledge, the standard remoistenable adhesives supplied by National Starch for envelopes do not contain gluten. Their suggestion to the general public would be that neither National Starch nor the envelope industry in general encourages licking envelopes. A moist sponge should be used. I hope this helps, Lee
