It's a very minor procedure, honestly. My husband watched the whole thing with

our baby. Tylenol before and after is a good idea.

Tenotomy on Friday

Hi everybody,

After 20 casts, 9 of them were Ponseti casts our son Kody is

going to have the tenotomy on Friday.

I have mixed feelings about it. On one site I'm happy since this

suppose to mean that the foot is corrected. On the other hand it's

going to be nerveracking.

Is this going to be painful for him? And does anybody have any tips

for this day? Is it enough to give some tylenol (before and after)?

I'm so thankful for this group!

I was in the room when dd had hers done. She cried but it was over

fast and as soon as they were done and started putting the cast on

she was fine. She cried the most when they were rubbing on some

antiseptic and giving her the Novocain shots. It wasn't near as bad

as I thought it would be. She slept fine that night and I stopped

giving her Tylenol the next day and she was fine. I think the pain

level is like when they get shots for their well baby checkups. They

have some pokes and pricks and they are mad and scared but it is over

soon and forgotten quickly. HTH. It is really much harder on the

parents than the child.

Best of luck tomorrow. It will really be okay. I will be honest with you, Rose

screamed the whole time (which was about 3 minutes) and it broke my heart. But,

when it was done they gave us tylenol with codene and we gave it to her for 24

hours. Then we switched to regular tylenol when she seemed uncomfortable over

the next couple of days. She was fine. She has a tiny little scar that I can

see but I have had to point it out to others. It is the most nonsurgery surgery

there is. It reminded me of when I had a mole removed.

I will be thinking of you.

Hi Klaudia...

had his tenotomy just 2 weeks ago. They have to fast for like 8 hours

before, that is tough. The actual surgery is only about 30 minutes. The toughest

part is the recovery afterwards. was moaning for like 2 hours.. it was so

sad. He wouldn't take a bottle for a while, and when he did, he only took like 2

ounces. He was on painkillers the first day. He actually slept fine the first

night, but after that he was pretty miserable that next day and the following

night. Tylenol with codeine is probably what your dr. will give him. The first

one or two days are tough, after that was back to normal. His casts come

off on July 27th, so I will let u know how he did. Good luck! He will be fine...

you might not be... but he will!! :o)

I will weigh in with Robin here, but with a little twist. Kai had his tenotomy

done by the same doctor that did Rose's (Dr Mosca) and while I was not in the

room with him (my husband was) I could hear him screaching from the cast room

across the hall. He continued to scream thru the casting that followed. Having

said that, here is the twist. Dr Mosca did a tenotomy on another child directly

before doing Kai's, and that child did not so much as squeek that I could hear

and she was completely happy while being casted. Made Kai look like a big faker

LOL We also gave Kai the Tylenol w/codiene the first 216 hours, but then he had

a bad reaction (no surprise, I cant take it either) and we had to switch to

normal Tylenol, but it did not seem to be a big deal.

Take from that what you will, but know that almost all of us have been there and

are rooting for you!

I'm with the others in saying almost all of our kids have gone thru

the tenotomy and we'll be thinking of you! There seem to be many

different experiences with this procedure and I absolutely don't want

our experience to scare you...just to give you some things to make

sure of for your child. Some dr's do tenotomies in the OR under

anesthetic and others do it in the clinic with just the topical

anesthetic as ours did. I see others mentioning novocaine etc. and

it makes me so sad because my son didn't have it. They just slapped

on some topical anesthetic, waited 20 minutes (I think) and

proceded. My son screamed like an animal as soon as they started and

screamed until he was worn out. It was so awful. He stopped nursing

for several days and wouldn't even take a bottle from me. I had to

pump and my husband bottle fed him. I was completely heartbroken

that we didn't realize we should have insisted on more pain control.

I realize the risks of general anesthetic for infants are high so

maybe that isn't the best option. Yes, the procedure is minor, but

make sure they do more than topical anesthetic. It isn't enough.

That said, the tenotomy was 100% successful and everything else about

it was positive. I'm hesitating to even post this now because it

sounds so negative. But I'm going to hurry up and push the button

because if you just insist on good pain control everything will be

fine....Best of luck to you!!!!

Hi ! Everyone seems to have some great advice for you but our

story varies a little so I thought I would share it too.

My son Ethan has had two tenotomies. Like most of the other children

here, he screamed so loud you would have thought the Dr literally cut

his foot off. I will admit, with his first tenotomy, I cried right

along with him. The Dr asked if I wanted to leave but there was no way

I would leave him to go through that alone, even if he won't remember.

Ethan however, stopped crying the second his leg was let go of. We had

had such a cranky baby during the entire casting process. We expected

that he would go back to being cranky after the topical wore off but

he never did. It must have been painful for him not to be able to flex

his feet. Anyway, we had a good experience after the tenotomy so I

wanted you to know that it really could go either way. Ethan nursed

immediately afterward. I have read some posts that say baby should

fast for 8 hours before but our Dr suggested that I nurse him

immediately before so he would be full and comfortable. Might be

something to check, I don't know if Dr Ponseti requires fasting or not.

Hope everything went well today!

I know how nervous you are , I've been in your shoes twice. My daughter,

Livie, has had two tenotomies on the same foot. The first was done at a

Shriner's hospital and was done under a general anesthetic. She was taken into

the operating room at 8:45 and they brought her back to her room at 9:20, so she

was not under for very long. She had been required to fast for 4 hours before

the surgery due to the anesthesia, so she had a bottle immediately upon

returning to her room. She was very groggy for the rest of the day. Although

that night was the first time she managed to roll herself over from back to

front at 4.5 months old. She didn't seem to have any discomfort, but we gave

her tylenol just in case for the first 24 hours.

Her second tenotmy was done in Iowa at about 6 months old. Dr. Ponseti asked us

to leave the room while Dr. Morcuende did the procedure. We walked to the end of

the hall and stood there for about 5 minutes. Then they told us we could come

back. Livie was laying on the table happily drinking a bottle while Dr. Ponseti

finished applying her cast. He said she cried a little bit when the incision

was made, but she was fine by the time we came back. Again, she seemed to have

little to no discomfort after the procedure.

Both of Livie's tenotomy casts were left on for three weeks and both got blood

soaked at the heel. Don't be surprised by this! It is normal!

Good luck and I'll be thinking of you and Kody tomorrow!
