Guest guest
I'm in Winona MN so Mayo (30 miles away) was one of my first calls in late 2002 . At that time I was told by a nurse that they were doing hemi resurfacing for AVN patients. No complete resurfacing - had never heard of that - and never for OA. So much for state of the art. After many other dead ends, I found Dr. Stachniw in Galesburg. I think he is the closest resurfacing surgeon to MN or was at the time (last year). I ended up, for dysplasia reasons, going to the Belgian wizard and am happy as can be with the result. Walked 3.5 miles today - jogged part of it. Last year it was all I could do to get across the room. I am not sure anything has changed at Mayo. They tend to be VERY conservative over there and since FDA approval is pending, doubt that they would touch resurfacing. Guest guest
Ruth, The " arthroplasty with tendon interposition " surgery was developed at Mayo by Dr. Bernard Morray, who has been my doctor for many years. We have been talking about this surgery as an alternative to hip replacement for the past three years, so they have been doing it. From what he told me, Mayo is the only place where it is being done. You had to have an implant right? If so, then this procedure would not be suitable for someone with AVN since your would joints remain intact, so maybe that's why they didn't discuss it with you. Did you have any joint space or cartilage left? What the procedure consists of is dislocating the hip, smoothing out both joint surfaces, removing any bone overgrowth of the hip socket and placing a piece of donor achilles tendon in-between to act as an artificial cartilage. The tendon is dead tissue, so there is no need for anti-rejection drugs. I'm scheduled for this surgery in late March.

Guest guest
Alyce, I haven't found anything on the web relating to this procedure so I can only go by what my doctor told me. According to my doctor, who developed this surgery at Mayo, everyone they have operated on using this procedure were pleased with the results. Since this is a new procedure, what is not known is how long it will last. He told me that the first ones they did in the mid 90's haven't worn out yet and back then they were using skin grafts from the patient as artificial cartilage. They decided to use the donor tendon a few years later because it is much stronger and should last longer than the skin grafts. But unlike a total hip, this procedure can be done again without the risks associated with replacing an implant. Here is some info on my doctor: http://www.mayoclinic.org/orthopedicsurgery-rst/10203141.html http://mayoresearch.mayo.edu/mayo/research/staff/morrey_bf.cfm By the way, I hope people don't think that I'm in the group just to pump this new operation of give people false hopes. I came to this group hoping to find some more information about this surgery before I go under the knife in late March.
