Guest guest
Hi Everyone I need information on the zevex pump. At present it is not available in Australia, but I have found a company that are going to bring it in and will be trying for govt approval. How many RSS kids have a zevex?? for continuous feeds during the day or just night feeds? What is it like compared to others? Is it better than doing bolus feeds? At what age did they start using it, is it cumbersome for young children to carry? Liam is on pump(kangaroo) over night and hourly boluses during the day, this is because his GI Dr is concerned about dehydration( its the middle of summer here) Liam has formula(concentrated) one hour and water the next. Since being on this regime he has put on weight and is alot brighter and healthier. His GI Dr wants to wait till we get him up to 8kg which is weight for height where he should be and then challenge his appetite. I dont think he will eat at this stage and I wonder how long it will be till he gets the the magic 8kg. Im prepared to continue the hourly boluses for a while but I dont think my sanity can take it for to long. If anyone has any positive stories about the zevex, Id really appreciate hearing, they may just help me be able to get one for Liam if he needs it. Thank you Jody(mum to Liam 7.1kg , 70cm about 15lb 27.5in)
Guest guest
We have a zevex pump and have been very happy with it. is on continuous overnight feeds. during the day, he is on the pump part of the time and comes off the pump long enough to build an appetite for breakfast, lunch and dinner which he eats by mouth. When started wearing the pump he was age 2 1/2 and weighed around 16 pounds. As long as we took care not to put too much formula (which would add to the weight he was carrying) in the pump bag, he was fine. Bolus feeds are not done through his pump but by gravity. We simply measure how much formula he should have into a tiny 2 ounce bottle, and then pour it into a venting syringe attached to a mickey connector and wait for it to flow into him. Currently Dr H doesn't want having much in the way of bolus feeds, so he only gets 1 per day for 1 hour. If you have any other questions, feel free to email me directly. Guest guest
Hi Jody, My grandson, , uses a Zevex pump. I love it! It is easy to learn to use, and it tells you what is wrong whenever the alarm goes off. It is small, compact and light weight. Dr H likes them, because the pump, bag and tubing, all fit into a backpack small enough for RSS kids to carry around on their own, giving them much more freedom. The " Kangaroo " pumps that has had in the hospital are larger and much heavier than the Zevex. They, also, work on gravity feed, where as the Zevex does not need gravity feed. You fill the bag, work the air out, and cap it. You can, then, roll the bag, making it small and compact. It is made by the Enteralite Company. Guest guest
Hi Jody:-) There are a number of our children using the Zevex pump. It is much smaller and lighter than the Kangaroo. When the children are mobile they can wear the pump in a very small back pack, which has worked real well. It is a sensitive pump in that you will know immediately if the formula is not flowing through it properly... It has been very durable too. The backpack Dr H found is perfect for the pump and very small so our kids can wear it easily. Jodi Zwain may be able to help you find a way to get one of these back packs or explain it enough that you could find something comparable. My daughter is not walking yet so she does not wear the back pack --hopefully by the fall. Good luck -- Jovanovich ****Please note - our NEW e-mail address laura@... Guest guest
Jody, We use the Zevex EnteraLite pump and I can't say enough good things about it. My son, , has had a g-tube since 18 months and he's now almost 5 years old. We started with the FlexiFlo Companion and I thought that was fine until Dr. H suggested we switch to the Zevec. It's small, the lightest pump out there, can come with a backpack which we use all the time. hasn't spent much time actually wearing the backpack, but when we travel, it's real easy to pack up and go. It has a 24 hour chg. and a start/stop option if you needed to have it shut off during the night for a period of time. For example, if you're child had trouble tolerating the night feeds, the pump could be set to run for 3 hours, shut off for 1 hour, then turn back on for 3 hours, etc., etc. You wouldn't have to keep getting up during the night to do this. The FlexiFlo was very sensitive and went off constantly during the night. The Zevex hardly ever goes off which means we get more sleep. Anyway, we love the Zevex and would recommend it as the best pump out there. Personally, I can't stand the Kangaroo pump. Way too complicated for my little brain. Check out www.zevex.com for more info. And, I'm not a salesperson for Zevex. I just love their pump. Guest guest
Jody, Dr. H. found those backpacks in a dollar store. They are plastic and were made for joggers to put water in when they are out running. I know she found them in NYC, but each time I go into a dollar store, like she did, I look for them, too. I figure, there are enough kids who need them that I can pick them up and keep a supply here and take them to Dr. H. when we see her. The only problem is that I have not found any yet. I'm sure, however, that any small backpack would work. They do make toddler sizes now. I've seen them at the Disney Store and in the children's departments of other stores. There are so many kids now who want their own backpacks that they make the smallest ones I've ever seen. When Max was using a pump, we had to design a holder for it. They did not make backpacks that were small enough. We used a pair of overalls as a pattern and made a pouch with a zipper to hold his pump in the back. It had a " bib " in the front, straps with adjustable buttons on the shoulders and a waist also with adjustable buttons. Actually, my housekeeper at the time was the one who did the sewing. I chose cute kid fabric and sometimes appliqued pictures or designs on them. I hope this helps you. If I do find the packs, I would be happy to let you know and send one your way. But I'm sure if you look around, you will find one. Jodi

Guest guest
Not sure if anyone already mentioned this, but the other neat thing about the Zevex pump is that it doesn't have to remain right-side-up to keep working. Our Kangaroo pump was very particular about that. It is also very light weight. We never actually used the Zevex, but I have only heard great things about it....as you see from your responses.
