Guest guest
Hi. I am from Washington State and saw Dr Santore in November 2001. My OS referred me to him for a Ganz periacetabular osteotomy. I am a very active rock climber and my OS felt that a THR would not last for me. He knew nothing of resurfacing at the time. Neither did I. Dr Santore took x-rays upon my arrival and told me that I was no longer a candidate for the osteotomy. I was devastated. He wanted to do a non cemented THR with a polyethylene cup. Looking back on our conversations, Santore knew about resurfacing, but didn't say a word to me. We ended up arguing. He told me that I was an addict to exercise, as bad as a smoker or an alcoholic. We were definitely not on the same page. He became agitated with me because I wanted more information and I was wasting his time. I literally jumped off the gurney and returned home. I would not allow this prominent surgeon to touch me. He did not care about me and I found him to be nauseatingly arrogant. This was 3 years ago. Perhaps he has changed. I have since seen Dr De Smet and have returned to my former active life. Just returned from rock climbing in Queens Creek in AZ. All I can tell you is to beware. And don't believe for a minute that he is a good doctor. Not in an altruistic sense of the word. Good Luck, Rock climbin' Jude LBHR De Smet 09/11/02 Dr. Santore? ....Is a prominent Hip Specialist who works out of San diego. Guest guest
Judy, Thank you for taking time to respond. What you have shared is exactly what I was afraid to hear. I am not bound to Santore for any reason, I had just heard he was a hip guru. I suppose it is possible that he has now accepted the resurfacing. If I should choose to see Dr. Santore, I assure you it will be with some trepidation, especially in light of what you have shared. I am still holding out hope that my HMO will allow a direct referral from my primary physician to the JRI in Los Angeles. I too will try to contact Dr. Smet and see what I need to do to discuss my candidacy for a resurfacing. Once again, I thank you for your help!
